GOLDEN-The Adams State University got their first two-game sweep on Saturday as they defeated the Colorado School of MInes Orediggers, 8-7, before downing the Black Hills State University YellowJackets 7-5. The sweep came in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Pod Weekend action hosted by the Orediggers.
The action started early on Saturday with the Grizzlies jumping out to a quick 1-0 lead as back-to-back triples in the top of the first inning allowed
Paige Reichmuth to triple down the left field line to score lead off hitter Tyler Hayes. The Orediggers thought they would have the upper hand in the bottom of the inning as they score two quick runns, one on a bases loaded walk before a ground out, to make the score 2-1.
Adams State then exploded offensively for six runs in the top of thre third inning as ten batters went to te place and four hits were tallied. The Grizzlies scored on a double by
Gabrielle Griego, a single up the middle by
Marissa Harmon and then a 3-run double from Cheyene Hamilton before
Kalin Johnson had a single to left field.
The Orediggers then scored two runs in the bottom of the third and bottom of the fifth sandwiched around a single run in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game up at seven. After a scoreless sixth inning, Adams State broke the stalemate and got the game-winning run to start the second straight doubleheader from
Shaena Connelly as she nailed a single through the left side.
In the game, Kaitlin Hoffman got the win as she pitched three innings and allowed two hits and no runs with three strikeouts.
In the second game, Adams State score single runs in all of the first three innings including a solo homer froim Griego in the third inning before the YellowJackets got a homer of their own, this one a 3-run jack, to tie the game in the bottom of the third.
Adams State scorfed two runs in the top of the fifth and top of the sixth innings to put the game away. The big hit of the inning was a double from Harmon.
Kacee Schroeder got her second win of the season while Hoffmann, who putched 2.1 innings and allowed a single unearned run, got her first save of ther season.
Adams State returns to action on Sunday when they play Black Hills State at 12 p.m. and Colorado School of Mines ar 2 p.m.
