GOLDEN—The Adams State University Softball team saw their season-high winning streak swell to four games on Sunday as they completed a perfect Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Pod Weekend sweep. They defeated the Black Hills State University Yellowjackets 7-5 before knocking of the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers 4-2.
The Grizzlies, who are now 8-16 overall and 6-6 in RMAC play, will look to keep their streak alive and grow next Saturday and Sunday as they remain on the road and will be in Lakewood to take on the Colorado Christian University Cougars in a four-game set. The Cougars will enter the weekend 5-17 overall and 4-8 in conference play.
On Sunday, the Grizzlies opened up the doubleheader with by getting off to a 2-0 lead over the Yellowjackets, thanks in part to the small ball. They scored the first run in the bottom of the first inning on a fielding error before
Paige Reichmuth singled through the right side in the bottom of the third to bring
Kalin Johnson around for the second unearned run of the game.
A single run on a ground out in the top of the fourth inning was all Black Hills could muster up as
April Riggins doubled but was cut down trying to stretch it to a triple. On the play
Cheyenne Hamilton and
Kelsi Kautz scored to seal the win.
The win went to
Lauren Murphy, who is now 3-7 on the season, as she allowed the single earned run on three hits and two hit batsmen with two strikeouts. Kaitlin Hoffman got credited with her second save in as many games as she had two shutout innings but allowed five hits while setting down one on strikes.
In the second game, Adams State held Colorado Mines scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning. They scored on
Gabrielle Griego's sixth homer of the season, her second in as many days, in the top of the first inning.
Morgan Zanski earned two RBI in the top of the fourth inning as she singled up the middle allowing
Tyler Hays and Riggins to score.
Griego then earned her second RBI of the game on a double to left field in the top of the seventh to push Johnson around.
The Orediggers were only able to get two hits and two runs in the bottom of the seventh before they went down.
Kacee Schroeder earned her third win of the season as she started the game and had four 2-hit innings of work. Hoffman came in as a reliever and allowed the two runs to score before Murphy earned her first save of the season by closing the door in the bottom of the seventh.
On the weekend,
Gabrielle Griego was the top batter for Adams State as she was 4-of-11 at the plate as a starter in all four of the Grizzlies' wins. She tallied five RBI and scored five runs as two of her four hits were home runs. She was credited with 12 total bases on the weekend as she tallied a 1.091 slugging percentage.
The top pitcher on the weekend for the Grizzlies was Kaitlin Hoffman as she earned two saves on four appearances. She tossed 9.1 innings and where she allowed three runs, only two earned, on 11 hits and two walks. She had six strikeouts to help her hold a 1.50 ERA on the weekend.
