LUBBOCK, Texas (February 5, 2016) – Adams State University was kept out of the win column on Friday afternoon as Lubbock Christian University loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth and eventually scored to escape with a 7-6 win.
After the Chaparrals (2-0) took an early 1-0 lead,
Zach Moldenhauer connected for a two RBI single in the top of the third to place ASU (0-2) ahead, 2-1. The advantage did not last long as Lubbock Christian answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame and produced another in the fourth. Now facing a 5-2 deficit, the ASU bats fell silent until the seventh. With one out and the bases juiced in the seventh,
Chris Morley earned an RBI walk to score
Dillon Bollig.
Tyler Thurston followed with a RBI sacrifice fly to inch the Grizzlies closer at 5-4.
The Green & White eventually took the lead with two more runs in the eighth as Bollig sent a ball over the right field fence for a two RBI jack. Bollig's homer marked the first for ASU during the 2016 season.
LCU's Brandon Urquizo brought the game to a 6-6 tie in the bottom of the eight with a RBI single to score Jaime Bustamante from second. Any further damage was halted as the frame ended with a fly out to centerfield.
After the Grizzlies were retired in order in the ninth, the stage was set for LCU's walk off win. With one out and the bases loaded, Hunter McFall scored on a fielder's choice, handing the Grizzlies their second consecutive loss to begin the season.
Bollig concluded his day with a 1-for-2 performance at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Moldenhauer provided a pair of hits and two RBI in the loss. Despite both teams collecting eight hits the Grizzlies were haunted by tallying a total of 10 strikeouts.
