ANGELO, Texas—An 8-run run in the bottom of the first inning saw Adams State get off on the wrong foot and they were just unable to overcome that as they dropped two games on the second day of the George McCorkle Softball Tournament.
The Grizzlies dropped the opening game to the host Angelo State, 9-8. They then dropped their second game to the Texas A&M International University Dustdevils, 6-3.
The team will close out their weekend in Texas on Sunday when they take on Angelo State University at 9:30 a.m. and the Dustdevils at noon.
In the first game, the Grizzlies stumbled out of the gates as they went through three pitchers in the bottom of the first as they allowed eight runs on just two hits. They allowed five walks, two wild pitches and two illegal pitches to allow the eight runs to cross the plate.
Despite being down by such a big deficit, the Grizzlies battled back and scored six runs in the top of the second inning on five hits.
Gabrielle Griego started the inning with a single before the bases were loaded on a walk and a hit by pitch.
Shaena Connelly and
Alexandria Quintana both had RBI singles to the shortstop before
Kalin Johnson cleared the bases with a triple.
They then tied the game in the top of the third inning as
Paige Reichmuth had a 2-RBI single to left field. The lead did not last long however as an RBI double in the bottom half of the inning was the final run scored.
In the second game Adams State jumped out to an early lead as Reichmuth had an RBI but the Dustdevils scored three unanswered runs before Adams State scored an unearned run in the bottom of the third. They then scored their only other run in the bottom of the sixth inning as
Marissa Harmon singled to right field.
So far, Adams State has been outscored 27-19 on the season as they are 1-3 on the season. They are led by both
Kalin Johnson, who is batting .333 and has six RBI on the season.
