ANGELO, Texas—The Adams State softball team had two early games on Sunday to wrap up a six-game series at the 2016 George McCorkle Invitational hosted by Angelo State. For the third straight day, the Grizzlies played Texas A&M International University and for the second day they played Angelo State.
An explosive five-run bottom of the fourth inning helped Angelo State win the first game on Sunday, 9-1. In the second game, the Grizzlies needed extra innings but a walkoff single helped them get the 2-1 win.
The first game saw Angelo State score two runs on two hits and one error with both of the runs being unearned. The Grizzled countered in the top of the fourth inning with an unearned run of their own as a single from
Marissa Harmon led to an error that saw
Paige Reichmuth score.
In the bottom half of the inning, five runs crossed on five hits and one error before they sealed the game in walkoff fashion in the bottom of the fifth inning with two runs on two hits.
In the second game, the Dustdevils took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. The Grizzlies countered as an error on the third baseman allowed
Kalin Johnson to come around and score from second base.
The two teams then got locked in a stalemate for four innings. In the top of the eighth inning, Adams State was able to overcome a hard spot as TAMIU had two runners in scoring position but they were able to pick off the runner at third push the game into the bottom of the eighth.
With the international tiebreaker rule in place,
Alexandria Quintana was placed on second base before Johnson drew an eight-pitch walk to set up a sacrifice bunt from Reichmuth. Tayler Hayes then got the walk off win as she singled to left field.
Adams State now, 1-5 on the season will turn their attention to the West Texas tournament this upcoming Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They will play Cameron University on Friday before taking on Texas Women's University.
