LAKEWOOD--Sunday saw a slugfest between the Adams State University and Colorado Christian University softball teams at Lakewood Park as a total of 49 runs crossed the plate in the doubleheader.
After trailing 12-2 in the opening game, the Grizzlies rallied back from the brink of a mercy rule loss to pull within one run, 12-11, before eventually falling 13-11. In the second game, Adams State scored seven runs in the top of the second and five in the top of the fifth inning to get the 14-11 win.
In the opening game, a
Gabrielle Griego 2-run homer put Adams State up early but 12-unanswered runs by CCU including a 6-run second and 5-run third inning. Even though they entered the fifth inning down by 10 runs, they did not fold. Instead three runs crossed in the fifth, one at a time, before they scored six runs in the top of the sixth.Â
In the rally to get back in the game,
Marissa Harmon had two RBI on a double and single while
Tyler Hays had two RBI on a double and a sacrifice fly. The biggest player in the rally was Riggins who tallied four RBI in the inning including a huge 3-run blast.
In the second game, Colorado Christian scored the opening run before Adams State scored seven runs in the top of the second. The two big hits were 2-RBI hits from Hamilton and Harmon.
CCU then rallied back and tied the game up in the bottom of the inning as a homer rallied a 6-run frame. They then took a 1-run lead, 8-7, into the fourth inning but a bases loaded walk by Hamilton once again tied the game at eight.
The 5-run rally put Adams State up for good in the top of the fifth as Adams State scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh.
In all Adams State tallied 35 hits on the day.Â
During the weekend, Adams State was led by
Marissa Harmon, who went 10-of-16 from the plate (.625) with 10 RBI and 22 total bases. Of those ten hits, five were extra base hits including three home runs. Harmon also drew one walk and had a .647 on base percentage. Defensively, Harmon earned 13 putouts and 1 assist had a perfect fielding percentage.
