ALAMOSA--The Adams State University softball team suffered two big losses to RMAC leading Colorado Mesa University on Friday afternoon as the Mavericks won the first game 11-2 in six innings before being dominated 14-0 in five innings in the second game.
The two teams are scheduled to have another doubleheader on Saturday starting at 11 a.m.
The game started out hot for the Grizzlies as a 2-run home run by
Gabrielle Griego was initially followed by another 2-run home run by
Tyler Hays but, a reporting error (she was wearing No. 16 but on the score card was supposed to be wearing No. 15), nullified the home run and they led 2-0.
The Mavericks chipped into the lead with solo home runs in the top of the second and top of the fourth innings. A solo home run in the top of the fifth gave CMU their first lead of the game.
Then the wheels fell off quickly for the Grizzlies in the inning as five defensive errors haunted them in the inning allowing five more runs to cross the plate.
In the top of the sixth inning, two more home runs flew over the fence to pace the Mavs to the mercy rule win.
Overall in the game, CMU had 12 hits, five of which were home runs while they scored seven earned runs.Â
In the second game, it was all, Colorado Mesa as they dominated every aspect of the game including nine hits. They capitalized on five errors because of the 14 runs scored, only four were earned in the second game.
Lauren Murphy was the pitcher of record and despite the error trouble, she also had seven walks in the game.
