GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (April 1, 2016) –
Evan Weidner picked up three hits Friday afternoon but the end result favored fourth-ranked Colorado Mesa University. Behind a five-run third inning and four runs in the eighth, Colorado Mesa defeated Adams State, 12-0.
The Grizzlies (14-16, 10-7 RMAC) connected for eight hits but could not cash one across home plate in the series opener. Adams State didn't see their first runner advance into scoring position until the sixth. The lack of baserunners along with hitting into three double plays and five 1-2-3 frames kept CMU in a comfortable position after their run producing third.
Alienating the Grizzlies was CMU starting pitcher JR McDermott (5-0) who fanned eight batters in as many innings pitched. His counterpart came in the form of ASU's
Tanner Wiemers (3-3) who lasted six innings but allowed eight runs off 12 hits. Wiemers added three strikeouts, three walks, two wild pitches, and one hit batter.
Zach Moldenhauer finished 2-for-4 as
Dillon Granzella went 1-for-4 with a double in the seventh.
The Grizzlies and Mavericks return for a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1pm.
