GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (April 2, 2016) -- In game one of a Saturday doubleheader against No. 4 Colorado Mesa University, it was Adams State University who notched a thrilling 3-2 win in the tenth inning.
It marked the program's first road win against the Mavericks since returning as a varsity program in 2013.
The Grizzlies (15-17, 11-8 RMAC) ultimately split Saturday's action as the Mavericks took game two, 3-1.
In Saturday's opener, the game required an extra three innings to decide the victor. A clutch tenth inning home run shot to right field by senior
Dillon Bollig proved to be the difference maker in the Grizzlies big day.
In game one, Bollig was the Grizzlies' most effective offensive playmaker. Bollig had a solid performance, hitting 3-for-5 with one RBI, a double, and his home run in the top of the tenth. Pitcher
Bailey Garcia (4-2) earned the victory for the Grizzlies, throwing 124 pitches in nine complete innings. The sophomore allowed nine hits, two earned runs, and walked four batters.
Benjamin Nutsch also saw action and earned the save after entering the game to start the bottom half of the tenth. Nutsch faced four batters and struck out two on a total of 10 pitches.
Evan Weidner chipped in a pair of hits and a run as
Thomaslee Mares added two hits in the opener.
In game two, the Grizzlies remained to be just as stingy and resilient against CMU. It was not until a three-run sixth inning by the Mavericks did ASU lose control. A pair of RBI bunt singles from CMU bookended the frame as an ASU fielding error scored another run for the Mavericks.
CMU's production was preceded by a run from ASU in the fifth thanks to a Bollig RBI single down the right field line. His hit advanced
Jake Gonzales from second base to home plate for a 1-0 Grizzly lead. To conclude the inning, ASU left two runners in scoring position.
In the sixth, the Grizzlies left two runners on base and were then retired in order during the seventh to end the game.
Josh Keaton (1-4) was the pitcher on the mound against the Mavericks and unfortunately earned the loss with six full innings of work. Keaton allowed three runs off six hits and compiled nine strikeouts with his 92 net pitches.
The two teams will conclude the series tomorrow afternoon with a single nine-inning game at Suplizio Field beginning at 12 pm.
