GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (April 3, 2016) – Adams State University entered Sunday's series finale with hopes of grabbing a win to split the four-game series with No. 4 Colorado Mesa University. Unfortunately, the Grizzlies were unable to pull through as the Mavericks claimed a 7-4 win.
The Grizzlies (15-18, 11-9 RMAC) struck with two runs apiece in the sixth and eighth but the Mavericks pulled ahead early to keep ASU playing catch-up. A CMU run in the first frame was followed by four runs in the third to give the Mavericks a 5-0 lead.
A leadoff double in the sixth by
Dillon Bollig lit a fuse for ASU in their run producing frame. Bollig wasted little time on the base paths as
Evan Weidner followed with a RBI single to center, scoring Bollig. Weidner advance to third on the play thanks to a CMU error by the center fielder. Weidner then pushed across home plate via a RBI sacrifice fly from
Zach Moldenhauer.
The inning tightened the CMU advantage to 5-2 but that quickly changed as CMU tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth.
In ASU's half of the eighth
Dillon Granzella stepped into the batter's box with the bases loaded. Facing a 1-1 count, Granzella lifted a two RBI double down the left field line to score Weidner and Bollig. The rally magic ended there, however, as a fly out to centerfield promptly ended the frame. In the ninth,
Thomaslee Mares produced a two-out triple but was left stranded as a ground out to second base followed to seal the victory for the Mavericks.
Bollig wrapped up his solid series against CMU with a 2-for-4 performance with two runs scored. For the series, Bollig hit .400 against the fourth-ranked team in the country. In Sunday's finale Weidner collected two hits as Granzella paced the Grizzlies with a team-best two RBI outing.
Nabeeh Blackburn got the starting nod as the junior lasted 2.1 innings and gave up five runs off six hits.
After three consecutive road series, Adams State now returns to Alamosa on April 8
th to begin a four-game series with Colorado School of Mines. First pitch is slated for 3pm at the ASU Baseball Field.
