ALAMOSA, Colo. (April 8th, 2016) – Adams State University became their own worst enemy on Friday during a 9-7 loss to Colorado School of Mines.
The Grizzlies (15-19, 11-10 RMAC) committed four errors and stranded 14 runners on base despite outhitting the Orediggers, 18-11.
The lackadaisical play allowed Colorado Mines to take a 9-4 lead through six innings but Adams State did attempt a comeback in the eighth with three runs. The Grizzlies were unable to pull ahead in their final frame at the plate although it began with a double to left center from
Michael Downs.
In the series opener, Downs and
Zach Moldenhauer led the ASU bats as both chipped in a 4-for-5 outing. Moldenhauer added a run scored and RBI as Downs was responsible for a run scored.
Deven Nelson added a 3-for-5 mark with 2 RBI as
Evan Weidner,
Dillon Granzella, and
Thomaslee Mares chipped in 2 hits apiece.
Tanner Wiemers (3-4) received the start but recorded the loss after tossing 6.0 frames. The senior allowed 9 runs off 8 hits but fell victim to defensive miscues that allowed Colorado Mines to take a lead.
Adams State took a brief 2-1 lead in the third with RBI singles from Weidner and Granzella but Colorado Mines notched a four-run fourth followed by two runs in the fifth and another two runs in the sixth.
Tyler Thomas (3-3) picked up the win for Colorado Mines as the Orediggers' offense tallied five doubles and a home run during the sixth.
