ALAMOSA, Colo. (April 9, 2016) – Saturday marked another rough day for Adams State University during a doubleheader sweep to Colorado School of Mines.
The Orediggers took game one, 11-7, and followed with a 10-1 victory during game two.
The Grizzlies (15-21, 11-12 RMAC) held a 6-0 lead in the opener through four frames. The lead came about with a pair of runs in the second and four runs during the fourth. Devin Nelson began the scoring in the second by sending a two-run jack over the left field fence.
Marco Garmendia,
Tyler Thurston, and
Michael Downs each came through with a RBI during the fourth. After his RBI hit, Downs came in to score after stealing third and then hustling around to home on the play thanks to a throwing error by the Orediggers' catcher.
The advantage quickly evaporated as Colorado Mines put up five runs in the fifth, four runs in the sixth, and two runs in the seventh. The burst of offense kept the Adams State bullpen active as four relievers saw action after starter
Bailey Garcia was pulled midway through the fifth inning.
Benjamin Nutsch (0-1) recorded the loss in a brief outing by allowing three runs off two hits that gave Colorado Mines a lead during the fifth.
Zach Moldenhauer and
Dillon Granzella both went 3-for-3 at the dish. Granzella accounted for two runs scored as Moldenhauer was responsible for a run scored along with a RBI.
Adams State grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first during the final game of the twinbill via a RBI ground out from
Dillon Bollig. It was déjà vu for ASU as the lead was squandered once again with a Colorado Mines four-run second inning. The Orediggers tacked on six insurance runs in the fifth to coast to a 10-1 road victory.
A comeback was not in the works for Adams State as the offense struggled after snagging their early lead.
With the starting nod,
Josh Keaton (1-5) picked up the loss in 4.1 innings of work. Keaton allowed 10 runs off 12 hits while walking two batters and striking out two.
Luke Bradshaw wrapped up the game for ASU on the mound and pitched serviceably by allowing no runs off two hits. It capped off a busy day for Bradshaw who also pitched for the Grizzlies during game one.
Dylan April paced the offense with two of ASU's five hits.
The Grizzlies and Orediggers conclude the series tomorrow at 12pm from the ASU Baseball Field.
