ALAMOSA, Colo. (April 10, 2016) – In a slugfest with 36 combined hits, it was Colorado School of Mines who prevailed to hand Adams State University a four-game series sweep via a 17-12 win on Sunday.
The Orediggers collected eight extra-base hits and scored in all but two innings. The Grizzlies (15-22, 11-13 RMAC) collected six extra-base hits but were unable to match the Orediggers' run production. With both offenses in full gear it made for a rough day for both pitching staffs. In the series finale, Adams State utilized five pitchers as Colorado Mines used four.
Colorado Mines took a 1-0 lead into the third before the floodgates opened. The Orediggers put up four runs in the frame to take a 5-0 lead. Adams State responded with a two RBI triple from
Dillon Bollig in the third followed by a balk an inning later to bring
Deven Nelson in to score from third.
The Orediggers came through with four additional runs in the fifth that kicked off five consecutive innings of run production. Meanwhile, the Grizzlies steadily chipped away at the lead highlighted by a five-run sixth. Adams State eventually knotted the game at 12-12 in the seventh with two runs thanks to a RBI ground out from
Evan Weidner and a RBI single from Bollig. Unfortunately for Adams State, the Orediggers retaliated with three runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth to bring the game to its final score of 17-12.
A total of five Grizzlies notched a multi-hit game as Bollig finished a home run shy of the cycle. Bollig's day concluded with a 4-for-5 performance with four RBI and three runs scored.
Drew Wells went 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Ryan Ferguson received the starting nod for Adams State and worked his way out of early jams before exiting midway through the fourth. Ferguson allowed nine runs off 11 hits and concluded his day with 100 net pitches.
Mason Munford (1-1) recorded the loss after giving up three runs in the eighth that broke up the 12-12 tied affair.
The Grizzlies remain at home next weekend by hosting Metropolitan State University of Denver. The series holds RMAC postseason tournament implications as Adams State currently holds the fourth and final postseason spot with Metro State currently in fifth. First pitch of game one is set for 3pm on Friday, April 15
