LAS VEGAS, N.M. (April 22, 2016) – With a pair of hits and five RBI, senior
Dillon Granzella paced the Adams State University (17-23, 13-14 RMAC) offense to a 14-11 victory over New Mexico Highlands University.
Granzella and the Grizzlies tallied 17 hits and 8 extra-base hits in the series opener. During the hit parade,
Evan Weidner and
Zach Moldenhauer each snagged two doubles as Granzella tagged a two RBI double in the sixth and followed with a three RBI homer in the eighth to help cement the win.
With a 5-0 lead midway through the fourth all signs pointed to a convincing Grizzly win, however, the game's narrative soon changed with Highland's five-run bottom of the fourth.
Starting pitcher
Tanner Wiemers (4-4) cruised through three frames by allowing only one hit until the Cowboy bats came alive. After giving up five runs, Wiemers settled in and lasted 7.0 innings on the mound. The senior finished with five strikeouts and allowed eight runs (six earned) off 10 hits.
The Grizzlies soon trailed 6-5 but retaliated with a four-run sixth and another four runs in the eighth to pull away from the Cowboys.
Granzella went 2-for-5 at the dish with 5 RBI and a run scored as Weidner tagged a game-high four hits with two runs scored and two RBI. Joining the aforementioned duo with a multi-hit game were
Dillon Bollig,
Deven Nelson,
Marco Garmendia, and Moldenhauer.
ASU's 14 runs on Friday ranks third in single-game scoring during the 2016 campaign. It also marked the first time scoring 10+ runs during a win since March 25
th (11-8, vs. Colorado Christian).
The two RMAC foes return to the diamond tomorrow at 3pm for game two of the series. Fans can follow along with live stats and free streaming video by visiting the ASU baseball schedule page.
