LAS VEGAS, N.M. (April 23, 2016) – Senior
Drew Wells notched his first homer of the season but it unfortunately served as the only source of offense for Adams State University (17-24, 13-15 RMAC) during a 4-3 loss to New Mexico Highlands University.
With runners in scoring position in the top of the first, Wells stepped into the batter's box and lifted a pitch on a 2-2 count over the right field fence. The three-run jack scored
Chris Morley and
Evan Weidner who both reached base with a single earlier in the frame. Wells' blast appeared to send Adams State in the right direction but the Cowboys grabbed runs in the second, third, and fourth innings to take a 4-3 advantage.
After the Cowboys grabbed the go-ahead run in the fourth via a leadoff homer, both teams were kept off the scoreboard moving forward. Adams State did, however, turn their first triple play of the season during the bottom of the fifth. The play began with catcher
Dylan April who caught a pop-up bunt attempt in foul territory. With runners moving on the play, April quickly threw to shortstop
Thomaslee Mares who tagged second base, then threw to
Tyler Thurston at first to complete the trifecta.
Wreaking havoc on Adams State throughout the day was NMHU pitcher Joel Lamont (2-5) who settled in after ASU's three-run first. Lamont recorded 11 strikeouts in a complete game performance and allowed a mere three hits after the first inning. Lamont recorded five 1-2-3 innings at Adams State's expense en route to his second win of the season.
Bailey Garcia (5-3) countered Lamont and took to the mound for Adams State with a complete game performance. The sophomore allowed four runs off 10 hits with five strikeouts. Despite the strong outing, offensive woes for Adams State kept Garcia from earning his sixth win of the season.
The conference series concludes tomorrow with a rubber-game at 12pm from Las Vegas, N.M.
