DURANGO—A 3-run blast from junior
Marissa Harmon in the top of the seventh inning of the final game of the 2016 regular season helped the Adams State University secure their spot into the 2016 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Softball Tournament next week.
The Grizzlies, who finish the regular season with a 17-19 conference record, finished in a tie with Colorado State University-Pueblo for seventh place. Because the ThunderWolves swept ASU in a 4-game series earlier this season, earned the No. 7 seed while ASU will be the No. 8 seed. They will play the No. 1 seed and host, Colorado Mesa University on Thursday. Fans can follow live stats, live video or listening to KSPK-FM.
On Sunday, Adams State dropped the first game 6-3 before getting the come from behind win 4-3 in the second game.
In the opening game, ASU scored three runs in the top of the first inning but then pitcher Oliva Goldberg shut the door as ASU had the first two leadoff batters in all but two innings. Starting pitcher
Lauren Murphy then appeared to run out of gas as she loaded the bases on walks. With Kaitlin Hoffman coming out of the bullpen, ASU then allowed five runs to score in the fifth inning to make it the final score of 6-3.
In the second game junior
Kacee Schroeder threw a complete game gem that saw her allow three runs as ASU scored the opening run but three single runs came across before Harmon's heroics in the top of the seventh.
The top player for Adams State was junior
Marissa Harmon who plated all four games finished with a .500 batting average as she went 8-of-16 at the plate with four runs scored. She had a 3-run blast that was pivotal in Sunday's game that helped ASU secure the spot in the RMAC tournament. She also had a double and six RBI over the weekend. She led th Grizzlies with 12 total bases as she also drew two walks. Defensively, she had 14 putouts and one assist.
