DENVER (May 2, 2016) – With a Monday sweep, Adams State University clinched their second consecutive RMAC Tournament berth. The postseason nod became official via a 16-9 win in game one followed by a 5-3 game two victory over Regis University.
"Great group of kids; I'm happy for them and our staff." Head coach
Jim Capra said of clinching a postseason berth, "We're playing well right now but have a lot of work ahead. It's an honor to represent our school and conference. Looking forward to the challenge ahead."
With the season series with Regis now complete, the Grizzlies finish with a 7-0 record against their RMAC foe.
The Monday sweep gave Adams State a single-season program record of 21 wins since returning to the diamond as a varsity program in 2013. The same holds true in the conference standings as the sweep gave the Grizzlies 17 RMAC wins to top their 16 conference wins a season ago.
In game one the Grizzlies scored in all but one inning of the 16-9 slugfest. The opener resulted in a career day for
Deven Nelson who collected six RBI off three hits. The senior picked up all six RBI off a pair of doubles and a triple. Nelson wasn't the only ASU batter haunting the Regis pitching staff as
Dillon Granzella picked up two RBI while hitting 3-for-3 at the dish.
Tyler Thurston was another leading figure in the hit parade with a 3-for-5 outing with two RBI.
The burst of offense was more than enough for starting pitcher
Bailey Garcia (6-3) who lasted seven frames on the mound. The sophomore registered nine strikeouts but was hampered by allowing two homers and nine runs off 11 hits. With the win, Garcia becomes the first ASU pitcher to notch six wins in a season since the Adams State baseball program returned in 2013.
Although the final score suggests an easy win, it was Regis who pulled ahead, 6-5, in the third. The lead was short-lived as the Grizzlies responded with a run in the fourth followed by a four-run fifth to pull away. With 16 runs, it marks the fourth time this season that ASU has scored 10 or more runs in a game against Regis.
Three consecutive strikeouts to begin the game was a sign of things to come for starting pitcher
Josh Keaton (3-5) in game two. In a complete game performance, Keaton set a school record with 14 strikeouts. Despite five wild pitches, Keaton stifled Regis batters and faced just minor setbacks in the second and seventh innings. Keaton allowed a pair of runs in the second and then committed three wild pitches in the seventh as the Rangers tacked on another run.
Evan Weidner wasted little time giving ASU a lead with his solo home run in the top of the first. Weidner concluded the final game of the twinbill 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored. A RBI sacrifice fly by
Michael Downs an inning later put ASU up 2-0 but the Rangers followed with their two-run frame to tie the affair. Breaking the tie were RBI knocks in the third from Granzella and
Marco Garmendia followed by a RBI sacrifice fly from Weidner in the fourth to push the Grizzlies ahead, 5-2.
Dillon Bollig produced a game-high three hits as Granzella, Garmendia, and Downs each picked up two hits apiece during the win.
With the regular season road slate complete, the Grizzlies return home on May 6
th to begin a three-game series with Colorado State University-Pueblo. First pitch of game one is set for 3 p.m.
