ALAMOSA, Colo. (January 13th, 2017) --- The Adams State women's basketball team kept themselves close for most of the night, but fell short in a 74-58 loss to the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology tonight.
Adams would start things off with a 6-0 lead before SDSMT managed to tie things up midway through the first at 8-8. The contest would stay just as even as the first period ended in a 14-14 deadlock. Although
Brianna Reyna would hit a jumper to make it a two point game midway through the period, the Grizzlies would slip a bit from there. The Hardrockers took a 13 point lead into the half by way of their 61.54% shooting from the field. The Grizzlies were 100% from the free throw line and had forced 7 turnovers at the half.
Looking to get back into the game, the Grizzlies would try a 3-point approach. Despite going 0-7 from downtown in the first half, the ladies found success in the second. Down by 20 at the midway point in the third period,
Cydney McHenry drained a 3.
Nicole Broyles-Mortensen and
Brianna Reyna would do their parts by adding a pair of layups. A few moments later, an uncommon 3 point shot fell for
Cheyenne Cleveland.
DeShea Wilkes would follow with a 3 of her own to cut the SD-Mines lead to 7. That would be as close as the Grizzlies would get for the rest of the game. The Hardrockers led 58-48 going into the final stage. The fourth period did not go as planned however and the Hardrockers pulled away for the 16 point win.
Adams played decent defense on the night, cashing in 16 turnovers for 25 points. The Grizzlies also got a lot of effort from the bench who scored 30 points.
Nicole Broyles-Mortensen led the team with 10 points and 8 rebounds. The Hardrockers had four players reach double digits and were led by Megan Rohrer's 19.
The team is right back at it tomorrow in Plachy Hall against Black Hills State at 5:30pm.
