ALAMOSA, Colo. (January 21, 2017) –
Kevin Dorsey played the role of hero Saturday night by sinking a buzzer-beating three-pointer to lift Adams State University to a wild 77-76 victory over Regis University.
With 4.1 seconds left a
Shane Johnson in-bound pass deflected off a Regis (12-6, 6-6 RMAC) defender and straight into Dorsey's hands. The senior guard took a dribble to his left followed by a pump fake before releasing the ball from the left wing. The last-second shot rattled around the rim and fell through the nylon as the red backboard lights flashed. Dorsey was immediately mobbed by his teammates along with fans who stormed the court.
A replay review immediately followed to confirm Dorsey's shot and officially bring the game to an end.
The thrilling conference finish extends Adams State's (10-10, 7-7 RMAC) win streak to five. The Grizzlies now own a 5-1 record during the month of January.
Dorsey's game-winner was preceded by other dramatics in the final minute. Trailing 76-73 with 17 seconds left, Johnson was sent to the line after being fouled on a three-point attempt. The junior calmly sank his first free throw but followed with a miss. Now trailing 76-74 with only one attempt left, head coach
Russ Caton called a timeout. Out of the break, Johnson intentionally missed his final attempt in hopes of an offensive rebound. The rebound scuffle turned into a loose ball battle between
Brandon Pasker and Regis' Ryan Beisty. As the two fought for control, the ball went out-of-bounds and prompted a replay review to determine possession. The review determined the ball graced off Beisty's finger tips to set up Dorsey's game-winning three.
The game remained close in the first half as the Grizzlies held a slim 46-44 halftime lead. The Grizzlies seized control after the break and established a 13-point advantage midway through the second half. Regis responded with a 12-0 run to cut the ASU lead to 66-65 less than five minutes later. The Grizzlies held onto a one possession lead moving forward but the Rangers eventually took a 75-73 lead with a Kevin Metoyer layup with 29 seconds left. A free throw by Jarrett Brodbeck followed to make it 76-73 before Adams State's dramatic comeback finish.
In the win, Pasker had a team-high 17 points and 9 rebounds. Johnson added 13 points as Dorsey and
Szymon Walczak each posted 10. Dorsey shot 4-of-6 on Saturday en route to his second consecutive double digit performance. In the last three games, Dorsey has averaged 9.6 points while shooting 60 percent (14-20) from the field. The impressive numbers have come with Dorsey averaging just 16 minutes of playing time during the three-game span.
The Grizzlies shot 54 percent from the field against Regis to give the program its ninth game of the season surpassing a 50 percent field goal shooting mark.
The Grizzlies have now won four of their past five games by a combined 8 points.
Adams State is back on the hardwood Jan. 28
th as they travel to face Colorado School of Mines at 7pm.
