GOLDEN, Colo. - The Adams State University men's soccer team came out flat this Friday night against the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's top ranked, Colorado School of Mines, 6-1.
Â
The Grizzlies did not get off to a good start as the Orediggers took a 2-0 lead in the game's first two minutes. The Grizzlies countered in the 41st minute when
Leo Barba got Adams State within one with a goal of his own.
Â
The second half belonged to the Orediggers as they would score four unanswered goals to put the Grizzlies away. John Haist would score for the Orediggers in the 60
th minute and in the 67
th minute off of a penalty kick for his 15
th and 16
th goals of the year. The Grizzlies had 18 fouls and five yellow cards.
Â
"Today was a bit of a shocking result," said head coach
Brett Bentley. "I thought we did well to weather the early enthusiasm by Mines, but when you play a top-25 team in the country you have to be mentally and physically sharp at all times. After going down 2-0 I was pleased with our response as we did well and almost drew level shortly before half. The positive though is that not many teams have taken points from Mines, so we still are very much in the mix for a postseason berth."
Â
The Orediggers outshot the Grizzlies 26-5 as well as having 15 corner kicks compared to Adams State's two.
Â
The Grizzlies drop to 3-5-1 in conference play with a 6-6-1 overall record. Meanwhile, Colorado School of Mines improves to league best 8-1 conference record.
Â
The Grizzlies will remain on the road as they battle Regis University in Denver this Sunday at 2:30 PM. The Regis Rangers are 6-5 on the year. The Grizzlies will look to pick up their first win in four games.
