Odessa, Texas - The Adams State University men's basketball team (1-2, 0-0 RMAC) pushed a No. 11 ranked Texas-Permian Basin (2-0) to the limit in a high scoring affair yesterday but fell just short 115-125 in double overtime.
Â
Though the game was tied a few times, the Grizzlies never led in the first half. In fact, they trailed by as much as 17 and it appeared that the Falcons would win it easy. The halftime score was 49-63 in favor of the home team.
Jarrett Givens and
Shane Johnson had already hit double-digits in scoring with 13 and 10 respectively by the half. Both teams were fantastic from three in the first half with Adams shooting 60% (6-10) and TPB at 70% (7-10).
Â
Much of the same occurred in the second, that is, until the 9:53 mark. At this point, the Grizzlies put together the run of the season so far, outscoring UTPB 25-8 and taking their first lead of the game with only 2:19 remaining. Down by two,
Brandon Sly hit a layup and was fouled with one second remaining in the game. Fate was not on ASU's side however, as the game winning free-throw would not fall.
Â
Down by three nearing the end of overtime,
Jarrett Givens hit a three pointer to tie it up with only 10 seconds remaining. The Falcons would miss a jumper at the buzzer and the game entered a second overtime. The upset bid would end in overtime number two as the Grizzlies were outscored 6-16. The Falcons escape 125-115.
Â
The 115 points is the most ever scored in an Adams State loss and the most scored overall since a 125-80 win over Portland Bible College in November of 2013.
Â
Adams State relied heavily on three point shooting, knocking down an unbelievable 15 of 27. The Falcons relied more on points in the paint with 58.
Jarrett Givens,
Brandon Sly, and
Shane Johnson all had over 20 points on the afternoon with Givens leading them all with 26 and five rebounds. The Falcons were led by Daeshon Francis' double-double performance with 36 points and 11 rebounds. Â Â Â Â
 Â
The Grizzlies return home to take on Northern New Mexico in an exhibition game this Tuesday at 7:30PM. Â Â Â Â Â
