Alamosa, Colorado - The Adams State University men's basketball team (5-5, 3-1 RMAC) had its five game winning streak snapped in tragic fashion tonight in an 87-90 loss in overtime to Colorado Mesa (6-4, 2-2 RMAC). An electric crowd and an unbelievable comeback would still not be enough in the devastating loss.
Â
The crowd came out in full force for a second night full of basketball action. In the early going, Adams held a small lead before being dominated from a 33-10 run by the Mavericks. Mesa led 43-29 at the half and spirits in Plachy Hall were pretty low. The Grizzlies were hindered greatly by 18 first half turnovers leading to 17 points for the opposition. The second half would be different, much different.
Â
The Mavericks started things off with a turnover and a quick three and even increased their lead to 26 points a few minutes later. The Grizzlies would then put together the run of the season going on a 32-7 rampage to pull within one single point. During the run, the Adams State defense held Mesa scoreless for five minutes and 24 seconds. A close battle ensued that was set up for ASU, up by four, to win but the Mavericks would score quickly in the final seconds to tie the game up. A
Brandon Sly layup would fall short at the end of regulation, sending the contest to overtime.
Â
CMU jumped out to a comfortable five point lead with a little over a minute remaining and seemed ready to run the clock out. The defense had other plans however as Mesa missed a three point attempt that led to a fast break layup by Sly. On the next possession, Trace Dimeff forced a turnover and set up a game tying situation with five seconds left. Sly would throw up the three but it was not to be as Mesa escaped with a three point win.
Â
The Mavericks ended up with 30 points off turnovers but the Grizzlies racked up 15 of their own in the second half alone. Adams owned the boards with 58 rebounds to Mesa's 38. ASU also produced 39 bench points.
Ethan Caton had a solid double-double showing with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Trace Dimeff led the team in scoring with 18 points, including four of the team's seven three pointers on the night.
Brandon Sly was also key with 15 points, seven assists, seven rebounds, and four steals. Emilio Acedo and Connor Nichols had 28 points and 24 points respectively for the Mavericks. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Â
The team will face a tough test on the road at Fort Lewis who is currently ranked 13
th nationally and won both of its games this weekend. Tip-off is set for 7:30PM on Tuesday. Â
