LUBBOCK, Texas (February 11, 2017) – A four-run third inning did not provide enough support as Adams State University fell 14-4 against No. 20 Lubbock Christian University.
ASU's third inning was a needed lift as Lubbock Christian notched a run in the bottom of the second to break the scoreless affair.
In Adams State's half of the third the Grizzlies strung together four consecutive singles. During that span
Michael Downs placed ASU on the board with a RBI single with
Patrick Huffaker then sending a RBI single down the right field line. A LCU wild pitch then scored Downs as
Thomaslee Mares competed the scoring by providing a RBI single to score Huffaker.
The Chaparrals tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the frame with three runs then took the lead for good with a run in the fifth, a five-run sixth inning, followed by a run in the seventh and eighth. The late offensive resurgence pushed LCU ahead to a 14-4 lead.
The tough day resulted in five pitchers for ASU during the loss.
Casey Weber (0-1) received the starting nod and lasted 5.0 innings while allowing seven runs off eight hits.
Ryan Ferguson,
David Maldonado,
Mason Munford, and
Beau Lofink also spent time on the mound as ASU searched for an answer to stop LCU.
The Chaparrals' offense consisted of eight extra-base hits including three triples and a home run.
Unfortunately Adams State's offensive production was limited to the third inning. The Grizzlies were unable to record a hit outside of the frame.
The Grizzlies return to Colorado to face Regis University and Colorado State University-Pueblo on Feb. 18-19. All games will take place in Pueblo.
