BB | Grizzlies Fall to Regis & CSU-Pueblo on Saturday

PUEBLO, Colo. (February 18, 2017) – Adams State University went 0-2 on Saturday in non-conference games with Regis University and Colorado State University-Pueblo. Adams State fell to Regis, 3-0, in the opener and concluded the day with a 3-2 defeat against CSU-Pueblo.

vs. Regis (L, 3-0)
The pitching duo of Daniel Brennan (0-1) and Bailey Garcia combined for three runs allowed off six hits and 13 strikeouts but the ASU offense was unable to send a runner across home plate in a 3-0 defeat to Regis.

Brennan went 5.0 innings in a starting spot; allowing two runs off four hits. With Brennan on the mound, Regis broke the scoreless affair in the top of the third as a throwing error from a single brought a Ranger in across the dish. In his final half inning, a Brennan leadoff walk and wild pitch placed Regis in scoring position. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third as a sacrifice fly brought in a Regis runner to place ASU in a 2-0 deficit.

After giving up a run in the sixth, Garcia settled in and allowed just one Regis runner to advance into scoring position. Bailey's day concluded with 4.0 innings of work with one run off two hits along with eight strikeouts.

Michael Downs led the offense with a 2-for-4 performance with singles in the sixth and eighth. After his two-out hit in the eighth, Downs was caught stealing to end the frame. The Grizzlies would go down in order in the ninth to bring the game to an end.

In the loss, Adams State did not advance a base runner past second and went down in order twice.

Dustin Kachel and Sawyer Morain were responsible for ASU's two other hits in the game.

at CSU-Pueblo (L, 3-2)
In Saturday's finale, the Grizzlies took a 2-1 lead in the sixth thanks to a RBI single from Tony Stanich and a RBI fielder's choice with Marco Garmendia at the plate. The scoring plays were put into place by a Thomaslee Mares double and Evan Weidner walk earlier in the frame.

The ThunderWolves tacked on a run in the bottom of the first and took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the seventh. The first run in the seventh came across with a bases loaded walk with the other coming from a RBI sacrifice bunt with the bases juiced.

After CSU-Pueblo's go-ahead run the Grizzlies threatened to score in the eighth and ninth.

With one out in the eighth, a Mares single and a Weidner double placed two runners in scoring position. The duo would not advance as ASU went down with a strikeout and groundout.

Dylan April began the ninth with a single and was replaced by Downs as a pinch runner. Downs ultimately advanced to third with a sacrifice bunt and a Nick Hill single. However, a double play brought the game to an end.

Mares, Weidner, and Garmendia each notched a double as Mares and Hill finished with two hits apiece.

Casey Weber lasted 4.1 innings on the mound in a starting spot. Weber finished with a run allowed off six hits but gave up four walks. Dylan Sherry (0-1) earned the loss as the pitcher of record when CSU-Pueblo took a 3-2 lead in the sixth. Sherry struck out three, walked four, and allowed two runs off one hit. Beau Lofink and Matthew Contreras also made relief appearances. The duo did not allow a hit and combined for three strikeouts.

The Grizzlies face the ThunderWolves tomorrow at 1pm.
