WBB| Defense Sets Season High But The Clock Runs Out On A Comeback Against Western

ALAMOSA, Colo (February 11th, 2017) --- The Adams State women's basketball team continued their relentless defensive attack but fell just short of a comeback tonight in Alamosa. Western State would escape with a narrow 80-71 win.

The game got off to a slow start for Adams State (2-20) who found themselves down 10-0 to start the game. From there, the Grizzlies would go on a 5-0 run to get things competitive. The Mountaineers (6-17) would go on a 16-6 run of their own to take a 15 point lead heading into the second. Adams would not let their misfortunes of the first period get them down in the second. The Grizzlies chipped away and got within four after a Lauren McDonald jumper late in the quarter. ASU outscored WSCU 19-13 in the second and found themselves down by nine at the half. The Grizzlies shot 48% from the field in the first half.

Again, Adams outscored the opposition in the third 21-19. The game got as close as five in the period. The fourth began with a manageable seven point deficit for ASU. Western led by as much as 18 with only 3:15 remaining in the game. All hope seemed lost, but the girls continued to press hard forcing a plethora of turnovers. All of a sudden, the Grizzlies were on an 11-2 run with momentum building. Unfortunately, there was not enough game clock to complete the comeback. Add a few more minutes, and this game may have gone the other way. Western held on to get the nine point win.

The Grizzlies set a season-high defensive stat tonight, forcing 24 turnovers which resulted in 23 points. Brianna Reyna and Cydney McHenry had four steals each, and six girls total recorded a steal on the night. Offensively, Adams did a good job of scoring in close with 32 points in the paint. DeShea Wilkes led ASU with 14 points. Brianna Reyna and Lejla Hadzialijagic scored 12 points and 10 points respectively. The Mountaineers had four players in double figures, led by Brianna Wilber's 19.

The team wraps up their home schedule next Friday against Colorado Christian. Tip-off is set for 5:30pm.
