ALAMOSA, Colo (February 17th, 2017) --- The Adams State women's basketball team held an early lead against Colorado Christian, but a late surge by the Cougars pushed them to an 87-73 win over the Grizzlies tonight in Plachy Hall.
Â
Seniors,
DeShea Wilkes and
Cydney McHenry were honored in the senior night ceremonies pregame as they prepared for the last home game of their ASU careers. Unfortunately, Wilkes suffered a season ending injury in her last game but was honored with a start and a quick substitution.
Â
In the early going, Adams was in control. A three pointer by
Cydney McHenry increased the lead to five late in the first. The Grizzlies would lead 16-13 heading into the second period. The ensuing period was a high scoring affair with the Cougars outscoring the Grizzlies 23-18. Adams State held the lead for most of the quarter but gave it up late to trail by two at halftime. The Grizzlies fared well in the first half due to their four made three pointers and 12 forced turnovers.
Â
In the third, it seemed that Colorado Christian had figured out an answer to Adam's press that had been so successful the past three games. Using a series of flashy passes and unselfish style of play, the visitors were able to outscore the Grizzlies 27-17 to take a 63-51 lead entering the fourth. With only 4:48 remaining in the game,
Lauren McDonald hit a layup and was fouled. After sinking the ensuing free-throw, the Cougar lead was cut down to six. That is as close as it would get as CCU kept their distance for the 14 point win.
Â
Even though the Cougars frequently broke through the press, Adams State was still able to force 18 turnovers.
Brianna Reyna would lead the defense with four steals and a block. The lone active senior,
Cydney McHenry, scored a team high 17 points including five from downtown.
Lauren McDonald also reached double-digits with 15, nine of which came from the free throw line.
Brianna Reyna fell one rebound short of a double-double on the night with 10 points and nine rebounds. Colorado Christian had five girls with double digit scoring numbers. The Cougars were led by  Alex Nelson who scored 26 points and added eight rebounds.       Â
Â
The team will finish up the remainder of the season on the road. An uncommon Tuesday game on February 21st at Fort Lewis and a February 25th matchup with Westminster will bring this season to a close.Â
