ALAMOSA, Colo. (February 17, 2017) – Senior Night for Adams State University did not end as planned as Colorado Christian University walked away with a 74-73 win.
The Grizzlies (12-14, 9-11 RMAC) held the final possession but a
Brandon Sly layup fell off the iron with two seconds left.
The night began in a funk as the Cougars' (13-12, 10-9 RMAC) zone defense limited the Grizzlies to a 31.2 percent (10-32) shooting clip in the opening stanza. ASU's first half production also including a 35.7 percent (5-14) mark from three-point range and just a pair of free throw attempts. The Grizzlies converted both free throw attempts.
Trailing 35-27 at halftime, the Grizzlies surged in the second half and outscored the Cougars by 7 points. The resurgence allowed Adams State to steadily climb back as a 12-point CCU lead with 13:29 remaining shrunk to a single possession affair less than six minutes later.
A
Brandon Pasker layup at the 6:33 mark gave Adams State their first lead of the game, 61-60. Moving forward the Cougars regained the lead with a Ty McGee jumper and a Brett Brady layup. A 6-1 run would give ASU a 71-68 lead with 2:39 left and would serve as their largest lead of the game. But the Cougars would take advantage of a 6-0 run that followed to position CCU ahead, 74-71.
Shane Johnson attempted to tie the game with a three from the corner but the shot did not fall through the nylon.
A
Bryan Umoru layup cut the lead to 74-73 with eight seconds left and forced ASU to foul and send CCU to the charity stripe. The strategy began with promise as Dimitri Saliba missed his free throw attempt but Sly's last second shot on the other end sealed the win for the Cougars.
Four players finished in double figures led by 15 points apiece from Sly and
J.R. Tailey. Umoru and Pasker each added 14. Tailey chipped in 12 rebounds as Pasker pulled in 10 to give the duo a double-double in the home finale. Sly added a game-high 6 assists and 3 steals.
The Grizzly bench outscored the Cougar reserves 27-10 and also held a 44-36 edge in points in the paint.
Jacob Taylor paced CCU with 17 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 blocks.
