ALAMOSA, Colo. (April 15, 2017) – Adams State University continued their weekend of competition in California, with athletes earning national qualifying marks at the Bryan Clay Invitational and the Mt. SAC Relays. Sophomore
Sydney Gidabuday and freshman
Kale Adams earned automatic qualifying marks, while 12 of their fellow Grizzlies scored provisional marks.
In the highly anticipated men's 5000m run, Gidabuday attempted to defend his title from last year's Mt. SAC meet. In a packed field of NCAA and professional athletes, Gidabuday led the race with 200m to go, but was passed on the final turn, ultimately finishing in fourth, with a time of 13:39.94. His time is an automatic qualifier, and currently leads all of NCAA Division II in the event by seven seconds.
Chandler Reid and
Kyle Masterson also competed in the 5,000m at Mt. SAC. Reid ran 14:06.92, a lifetime best, and Masterson 14:21.93. Both times are provisional qualifiers.
Adams ran his automatic qualifying time of 8:49.70 in the men's 3000m steeplechase at Mt. SAC, beating out last year's DII champion from Black Hills State University as well as other top competitors. The mark ranks first on the NCAA DII national list.
In the women's 800m,
Leanne Allen ran a provisional qualifying time of 2:10.23.
Jessica Scherrer ran the women's 400m hurdles in 59.91, a provisional mark.
Micah Ballantyne ran a provisional qualifying 10.61 in the men's 100m dash. Teammate
Ian Kerr ran 10.80. Kerr also ran in the men's 200m, with a time of 21.65
ASU senior
Sunayna Wahi ran a provisional qualifying 23.80 in the somen's 200m dash. Another provisional qualifying time came from the women's 4x100m relay, where the Adams State team ran 46.21.
Oweneika Watson and
Kiana Gomez competed in the women's 100m hurdles, running 14.42 and 15.25, respectively. Augie Larranaga competed in the men's 400m, running 49.53.
At the Bryan Clay Invitational, ASU athletes competed in 1500m and 800m races along with the high jump.
In the men's 1500m,
Jackson Sayler ran a lifetime best of 3:50.02, just ahead of teammate
Austin Anaya, who ran 3:50.06. Both times are provisional qualifiers. Freshman
Tanner Martin ran 4:12.82 in the event.
On the women's side,
Jenna Thurman,
Roisin Flanagan, and
Eilish Flanagan competed in the 1500m race. Thurman clocked in at 4:24.18, and
Roisin Flanagan at 4:25.10. Both marks are provisional qualifiers and personal-bests for the two Grizzlies.
Eilish Flanagan ran 4:35.06.
In the 800m races,
Tom Gifford and
Cari Steen also ran provisional qualifying marks. Gifford ran 1:51.83 in his season opener. Steen clocked in at 2:12.77, for a lifetime best in the event.
Wyatt Cunningham competed in the men's high jump, clearing 2.00m.
Adams State Track & Field will conclude its series of California competitions on Saturday afternoon at Long Beach State University's Beach Invitational.
