PUEBLO, Colo. (April 8, 2017) – A six-run ninth inning by Adams State University forced extra innings but New Mexico Highlands University scored a run in the 11
th to take an 11-10 win on Saturday.
Marco Garmendia paced the offense with a 4-for-5 day with three runs and a RBI. Garmendia notched three extra-base hits with a pair of triples and a double.
Erik Hildebrandt,
Thomaslee Mares, and
Ryne Niemi each posted three hits for the Grizzlies (10-23, 4-15 RMAC). Niemi added a game-high four RBI.
Mason Munford (1-1) picked up the loss in 2.2 innings of work with three strikeouts and one run allowed off one hit.
The Cowboys (13-21, 9-14 RMAC) held a 10-2 lead after six innings but the Grizzlies made noise late with two runs in the seventh followed by their six-run burst in the ninth.
During the ninth, Adams State sent nine batters to the plate resulting in six runs off six hits. The frame included two NMHU pitching change and three ASU doubles. All three doubles came consecutively to begin the frame. Hildebrandt led off with a double followed by RBI doubles from
Michael Downs and Mares. After a NMHU pitching change,
Dustin Kachel came through with a RBI single as Niemi then joined the hit parade with a two RBI single to right field. A
Derek Denovellis RBI groundout completed ASU's ninth inning scoring burst.
Munford relieved
Dylan Sherry to begin the bottom of the frame and went three up, three down to force extra innings. Munford made quick work of the Cowboys in the ninth via two groundouts and a strikeout.
The Grizzlies had their best chance for the go-ahead run in the 11
th. Garmendia led off with a double as Niemi was walked to set up a Denovellis sacrifice bunt to move both Garmendia and Niemi into scoring position. Unfortunately, Garmendia was tagged out at home with a
Tony Stanich fielder's choice followed by a fly out to end the threat.
The Cowboys ended the game in the bottom half of the 11
th as a wild pitch sent in the winning run from third.
In defeat, Adams State totaled 10 runs off a single-game best 20 hits. The team tied single-game highs in doubles (6) and triples (2).
