CANYON, Texas. (April 8, 2017) – Adams State University continued their success on day two of the 6th Annual West Texas A&M Classic with six additional provisional national qualifying marks. The meet featured national level performances by Grizzly athletes in the throws, multi, and sprint events.
Samuel Reid threw 17.79m in the men's shot put to win the meet and earn a provisional qualifier. His mark currently ranks fourth nationally. Reid also competed in the discus, throwing 47.77m for second place. Teammates
Brecht Van Waes and
Garrett Quintana placed fourth and fifth place, respectively, in the shot put. Waes threw 15.41m, and Quintana 15.09m. Quintana took fourth place in the men's discus with a mark of 46.70m. Andrew Vigil also competed in the men's discus, throwing 38.93m for 10th place. The Adams State thrower's combined efforts scored 32 of the team's 86 points in the meet.
Breann Hawman competed in the women's shot put, throwing 10.02m.
In the heptathlon, ASU's
Serena Canegan scored a provisional qualifying 4978 points, placing second in the event. The mark ranks Canegan seventh at the NCAA Division II level. Teammate
Katherine Smith placed eighth with 3853 points.
Adams State started off the Saturday running events with its women's 4x100m team, which consisted of
Oweneika Watson,
Dianna Johnson,
Jessica Scherrer, and
Sunayna Wahi. The team ran 45.72 for second place; a provisional qualifier mark that places the Adams State women fourth overall amongst Division II teams.
In the women's 100m, Johnson ran 11.64 to place first and earn a provisional qualifying time. The time currently ranks the reigning 60m indoor national champion third in Division II.
Heather Shoats also ran the women's 100m, running 12.61. In the 200m, Shoats ran 25.97,
Miranda Vigil ran 26.74, and
Aftynne Lujan ran 27.46.
In the men's 100m,
Ian Kerr ran 10.76 for seventh place. Kerr's best mark of the day came in the men's 200m where he ran 21.00 for fifth place, earning a provisional qualifying mark. The 200m feat ranks Kerr fourth nationally. Also in the 200m, Augie Larranaga ran 22.15, and
Wyatt Cunningham ran 23.66. In the men's 400m,
Sid Samtaney ran 54.64.
Cunningham earned one of ASU's provisional qualifying marks in the men's high jump, with a mark of 2.04m that was good enough for third place.
Watson placed third in the women's100m hurdles with a time of 14.45.
Kiana Gomez was 10th in the event, running 15.09.
In the distance events, Adams State had athletes in the men's 1500m and 800m races. In the 1500m,
Kristoffer Mugrage ran 4:04.90 for the fastest time in his section and third place overall.
Jackson Roberts ran 4:18.51 and
Dan Goll ran 4:25.52 in the event. In the 800m,
Grayson Freeman ran 2:01.85.
The Grizzly men finished the weekend in fourth place with 86 points, and the women in fifth place with 68 points.
The Grizzlies return to action next weekend to participate in three separate meets in California. Adams State will compete at the Mt. Sac Relays (4/13-15), Bryan Clay Invitational (4/14), and Beach Invitational (4/14-15).
