Canyon, Texas- The Adams State University volleyball team split day one of the 2017 BritKare Lady Buff Classic, winning 3-1 over UT-Permian Basin and losing 1-3 against St. Mary's.
 
In an early 9:00 AM game, it would be the Grizzlies taking the first two sets by a score of 25-17 in both sets before the University of Texas-Permian Basin won a wild 31-29 decision to force a fourth set. Already up 18-12 in the final set, the Grizzlies went on a 7-1 run to finish off the Falcons. In the game, Mallory Grimsrud led the way with 17 kills and eight total blocks. Katelyn Schwartz also had an amazing performance with 34 of the team's 38 assists. Rachel Dixon led the Falcons with 14 kills and six blocks.  
 
Later in the afternoon, ASU would drop a game to St. Mary's in four very close sets. The first set went into extra points but ended after the Rattlers scored the 25^th and 26^th points. Down 24-18 in the second, Adams State did their best to hold on with a 3-0 run, but were ultimately shot down after a Grizzly attacking error. Refusing to be swept, ASU dominated the third set with a 25-13 win, including a 6-1 run to finish it out. Unfortunately, the afternoon would belong to the Rattlers with a late surge in the fourth set. Hannah Goddard had 12 kills and seven digs for the Grizzlies, while Mandee Eberle had 20 kills and 11 digs for the Rattlers.
 
With her 27 kills on the day, Mallory Grimsrud moves into seventh place on the all-time career kills list for Adams State with 925. She can claim sixth place tomorrow if she exceeds three kills and fifth place if she exceeds 23 kills.
 
The team wraps up their showing in the BritKare Lady Buff Classic tomorrow with games against West Texas A&M at 1:00 PM and Southwestern Oklahoma State University at 5:30 PM.
