MSOC | Grizzlies Edge Out Skyhawks in Conference Showdown

ALAMOSA – It was a chilly night as Adams State University hosted Fort Lewis College on the soccer pitch, defeating them, 2-1, on Friday. With the win the Grizzlies tie the school record in wins, improving to 6-3 this season with a 3-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference record. Adams is a single conference win from tying the school record in conference play, with nine games remaining this season.

The Grizzlies were led offensively by sophomore, Leo Barba, who scored two goals for Adams State. Barba got the Grizzlies on the board in the 57th minute off of a deflection and in the 76th minute when he shot a missile that deflected off of a Fort Lewis defender for the goal. It was Barba's second and third goals of the season.

Fort Lewis would counter seconds after with a goal of their own by Ryan Lee to cut the Adams State lead to one. However, the Grizzlies continued to push the pace on offense keeping the ball in their territory during the closing minutes.

Both teams combined for 23 total shots with 12 being on goal. Each team had 13 fouls. Tensions would rise during the final minutes after a couple of fouls sent both teams into a shoving bout. Nonetheless, The Grizzlies would hold on for the win pushing them to a 6-3 record and a 3-2 conference record.

With the win, Adams State moves into a tie for third place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with MSU-Denver. This was a historic event, as it is only the second win against the Skyhawks in school history and the first in Alamosa.

The Grizzlies will remain home as they take on Colorado State University-Pueblo this Sunday at noon. The game will be played at the ASU soccer field.
