Grizzlies Fall to Trailblazers in Season Finale

ALAMOSA, Colo. - The Adams State University Football team closed out the 2018 season Saturday afternoon with a home finale against the Dixie State Trailblazers. The Grizzlies looked to send their seniors out on a high note but ultimately fell to the Trailblazers, 52-10, inside Rex Stadium.

Prior to kickoff, the Grizzlies honored 15 outstanding seniors in Miles FishbackNick RooneyAdam LuceroTyree HarrisMarquese SurrellIsaiah BrownIsaia RostenOno TafisiChad HovasseVaega LoloheaRJ MartinSergio MendozaKendrick IgbinobaKenny Hughes, and Garrett Jackson all played a major role in their time at Adams State. This group has established one the nation's highest scoring offenses, one of the top defensive players in Division II, a number of school record holders, and memories on the gridiron that fans will remember for years to come.

Despite the loss, the Grizzlies had to record setting performances. The first came from senior running back Tyree Harris who set a new single-season program rushing record. Coming into Saturday's game, Harris has 1,078 rushing yards and needed 80 yards to become the new record holder. He eclipsed that mark with room to spare as he rushed for 103 yards on 24 attempts to bring his final season total to 1,181 yards.

Harris' season total passes the previous mark of 1,157 rush yards which was set during the 1984 season by Bill Stone. The senior was a consistent weapon all year for the Grizzlies as she showcased speed and power for one of Division II's highest scoring offenses. The other record day came from another well known senior for Adams State in Chad Hovasse

Hovasse, who owns a number of season and career records for the Grizzlies entered Saturday's contest with 99 receptions on the year and needed just one to become the first player in school history to reach 100 receptions in a single season. He pulled in five catches to bring his final 2018 season total to 104.

The game started wth the Trailblazers scoring the game's first touchdown down in 39 seconds to grab a 7-0 lead. They led wire-to-wire to keep a high powered Grizzlies offense at bay all afternoon. Adams State looked to keep things interesting as Erick Ruiz hit a 19 yard field goal at the 11:02 mark of the first quarter to cut the Trailblazers lead to 7-3.

Dixie State responded scoring five straights while holding the Grizzlies to one more score the rest of the game. A touchdown late in the first quarter along with two touchdowns and a field goal in the second quarter gave them a 31-3 lead going into the break. They added one more touchdown early in the third quarter to lead 38-3 before Adams State scored again.

The lone touchdown for the Grizzlies was a highlight for the season. Michael Morales hit Marquese Surrell on a fade route and Surrell pulled in a circus catch even with his defender staying with him step-for-step. After pulling in the great catch, Surrell went 70 yards to the end zone to help the Grizzlies eclipse the double-digit mark.

Dixie State added two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to ultimately seal the win as Adams State never found an offensive groove to stay in the game.

Defensively, Garrett Jackson and Isaia Rosten led the Grizzlies with 12 tackles each. Both had seven solo tackles on the afternoon. Supa Leafa also added an interception to finish the year with a team-high three total.

The Grizzlies finish the 2018 season with 4-7 overall record and were 4-6 in RMAC play.
