ALAMOSA- The Adams State University men's basketball team (17-12, 14-8 RMAC) came very close to pulling yet another upset on the season tonight at home against Westminster College (21-4, 17-4 RMAC). In the end, a promising push would not be enough as the Griffins won 84-78 on senior night.
From the beginning it was obvious that this would be a close contest. Neither team could take a lead any larger than four until a 9-4 run gave Westminster a seven point advantage late in the first half. They would carry that momentum to lead by six at halftime.
The Griffins would come out strong in the second half eventually increasing the lead to 13 until Adams starting pushing back. A 16-7 run capped off by a
Brandon Sly layup made it just a two point deficit. Minutes later, another Sly layup cut it to one. The game would continue this trend all the way down to 20 seconds remaining. The Grizzlies could not score again however and the Griffins closed things out at the line, winning 84-78.
Brandon Sly led ASU with 20 points and four assists.
Jarrett Givens also had a solid night with 18 points and went 4/8 from downtown. Dayon Goodman continued his unbelievable year for Westminster with 26 points and eight rebounds.
Brandon Sly is now only 10 points away from 1000 career points.
The Grizzlies have clinched a berth in the RMAC Tournament, but it is still to be determined whether the team will host a first round game. Seeding results will be announced shortly after this weekend's RMAC games conclude.
