Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | By: Chris Little

MBB| Sly Reaches 1000 Point Mark As Grizzlies Advance To RMAC Semifinals With 64-61 Win Over Metro

ALAMOSA- The Adams State University men's basketball team (17-12, 15-8 RMAC) kept its season alive with a clutch performance at home in front of a packed crowd for tonight's first round Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament game. The Grizzlies ended up on top of Metro State (15-14, 14-9 RMAC) 64-61 for its first home RMAC Tournament game win since March 5th, 2013. Brandon Sly also reached 1000 career points in the win.

Neither team was ever in clear control tonight, which made for a very nerve-racking and exciting contest. Plachy had its biggest crowd of the year comprised of almost every student athlete on campus on one side, and several hundred community supporters on the other. In total, the lead changed hands five times and the largest lead for both teams was just six. The contest was only a one point game at the half.

The game remained air-tight in the second half, but things took an interesting turn with five minutes remaining. First, Frederick Jackson fouled out, followed by Mike Thomas and Ethan Caton all in span of two minutes. The fouls left Adams State without three of its biggest players. With only 1:22 remaining, a Shane Fox layup cut the Grizzlies' lead to just two. Cameron Williams then missed a layup for Metro after a Shane Johnson turnover that would cost them greatly. Mamadou Kamara would then hit one out of two free throws to push the lead back to three. A heavily contested Williams three by the Roadrunners would not even come close at the buzzer to try and tie. The horn sounded to a Grizzly 64-61 win as the students rushed the court to celebrate with the team.

Brandon Sly entered the game needing only 10 points to reach 1000 Adams State career points. Sly would exceed the mark with 13 points and six assists. The senior becomes third player on ASU history to reach that milestone in only two seasons. Sly spent the first two years of his collegiate career at Utah State University Eastern.

Shane Johnson led the home team with 16 points and four rebounds. Jarrett Givens added another 10 points and four steals. Cameron Williams put up 18 points and nine rebounds while Bounama Keita cleaned up the glass with 15 rebounds.

The Grizzlies will have to finish up on the road if they hope to win an RMAC Tournament Championship. No. 25 Fort Lewis awaits as the one seed after defeating Western 88-73 tonight. Adams State is 1-1 against FLC this season having won 107-93 at home last Tuesday, and having only lost 96-103 in overtime earlier this season in Durango.
