MBB | Sly Leads Grizzly in Physical Game against Highlands

ALAMOSA – In a game that featured 60 combined fouls, Adams State University men's basketball team prevailed over New Mexico Highlands University, led by Brandon Sly, who tied his season-high in points with 27. The Grizzlies are on a three game win streak and will take to the road for the next three games before returning home to close out the season.

It was a very physical game, as there were 60 personal fouls called between the two teams. Out of that, there were 59 free throw attempts, and at three times in the game there were more fouls called than points for Highlands. Sly was the largest benefactor of the calls, resulting in nine points from the charity stripe for the guard.

Sly led the team offensively, converting eight times on 13 attempts, while also shooting 13 free throws and sinking nine. He also dished out five assists and collected seven boards. Joining Sly in the scoring was Jarrett Givens and Mike Thomas with a dozen apiece. Givens also had nine boards, tying the team-high.

Defensively, Frederick Jackson was a force down low, tearing down nine boards and dishing out five blocks. Jackson and the Grizzlies held the Cowboys to just 31 percent shooting for the game, including 13 percent from beyond the arc and 25 percent in the second half. Those marks are the second-best defensive numbers this season, bettered only by the win against Mines last week.

Offensively, the Grizzlies shot well with a team shooting percentage of 50 percent from the field. It was just the ninth time this season the team has done so, while also shooting the second-lowest percentage from beyond the arc in those games.
