MBB| ASU Wins Fourth Straight Game Behind Brandon Sly & Jarrett Givens' Stellar Performances

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The Adams State University men's basketball team (14-10, 12-6 RMAC) continued its hot streak tonight with a 96-83 road win over Colorado Mesa (11-3, 7-10 RMAC). The win marks four straight for the Grizzlies and bumps them up one spot in the RMAC rankings to fifth. Due to a technicality, current two seed Westminster is not eligible to host an RMAC Tournament game, which means that ASU is currently in position to do so given that current success continues.

Though the lead only changed one time and was tied twice, the game was not overly close after halftime. The Mavericks would score 11 straight after Frederick Jackson opened the game with a jumper in the paint. Momentum changed midway through the half when Trace Dimeff was fouled on a three attempt and then converted on all three shots from the line. The Grizzlies would ride that momentum to a 42-39 halftime lead.

The game would remain close for a majority of the second until a 25-12 run capped off by a Dimeff three pointer put Adams up by 16. The Mavericks would cut it down to as low as eight, but never really threatened again as ASU went on to win by 13.

Adams State owned the offensive glass, converting 16 offensive rebounds into 23 second chance points. The Grizzlies would also rely on 39 points off the bench compared to Mesa's 13. Jarrett Givens absolutely went off tying his second most three pointers in a game this season, going 4-8 and tallying 18 points and eight rebounds on the night. Mike Thomas led the team with 21 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks. Brandon Sly recorded a double-double with 18 points and, a season-high tying 11 assists. Connor Nichols led the Mavericks with 23 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.

The Grizzlies are back at it tomorrow against Western State at 7:00PM. The Mountaineers lost 69-76 tonight to Fort Lewis in Gunnison.
