BETHANY, Okla. - The Adams State University Men's Soccer team suffered their second consecutive loss to open the season Saturday after after losing to Southern Nazarene University, 4-1, on the road. The Grizzlies once again fell victim to a second half scoring fury where they were unable to answer with any kind of offensive threat themselves. With the loss, Adams State falls to 0-2 on the year.
Cutter Smith opened up the scoring for the Storm with the game's first goal in the 21st minute. Grizzly forward Andree Salazar responded with a goal in the 25th minute to tie the score at 1-1 just past the midway point in the first half. Less than a minute later, Smith assisted teammate Jovanny Hernandez for his second goal of the season to put the Storm up again 2-1. SNU took a 2-1 lead into the halftime break and never looked back.
The second half featured two more goals from Southern Nazarene players Angel Lopez in the 48th minute, and Cristian Hernandez in the 68th minute. the two goals cushioned the lead as the Storm walked away victorious over the visiting Grizzlies, 4-1.
Offensive efficiency from the Storm combined with a superb performance from keeper Reagan Haydon who finished with six saves ultimately doomed the Grizzlies. While Adams had more shots 14-13, Southern Nazarene converted more opportunities closer to the goal, which was the difference in the end.
Salazar led the Grizzlies with their only goal, while Alex King had the most shots taken with three. Dylan Udero and Israel Varela each had two shots overall and one shot on goal, respectively. In net, Shawn Mckeeken collected four saves.
The Grizzlies will return to Alamosa for their home opener this coming Thursday, Sept. 6 against UT Permian Basin. Opening kick is set for 3 p.m. at the ASU Soccer Field.
