Grizzlies Fall in Five Against the Skyhawks

DURANGO, Colo. – The Adams State Women's Volleyball team played a close game tonight against the Fort Lewis Skyhawks. The Grizzlies took Fort Lewis to five, but fell in a tight match. Adams State now falls 7-11 overall, and 4-5 RMAC.
 
The game opened up with the Skyhawks jumping on an early 7-3 lead. Fort Lewis continued to push forward, extending their lead. The largest lead they held was five points over the Grizzlies. Adams State made a big comeback, scoring five with Alexandra MacAskill behind the service line, tying the score at 16. The Skyhawks had a few more rallies to tie the score at 17, and again at 18. The Grizzlies took over and finished the set 25-20.
 
The Skyhawks came out in the second set fired up and ready to go. The Grizzlies started out with the lead, and held it for the first part of the set. The two teams battled for the lead, tying the score five times. The Skyhawks held on the lead, and completed the second set 25-21.
 
Fort Lewis started the third set going on a 6-2 run. Adams State battled back, and tied the score at 10. The score was tied five more times, with the Skyhawks controlling the lead. Fort Lewis came out on top 25-19 in the third.
 
Adams State put out a lot of fight and effort in the fourth set, not ready to go home. The Grizzlies began the set on a 9-3 run. Other than scoring the first two points of the set, Adams State did not let the Skyhawks within four points of their lead. The Grizzlies held their largest lead at 10, and defeated the Skyhawks in the fourth set, 25-17.
 
Tied at two, the Grizzlies and the Skyhawks were ready for business in the fifth set. The Skyhawks came out and got the first points of the set, giving them an early advantage. Adams State battled back, tying the set at 7. The Skyhawks kept their momentum to push them through the end, taking the win 15-10.
 
Adams State's Riley Oglevie led the Grizzlies attack with 15 kills. Chasey Blach and MacAskill were close behind, with 11 and 10 kills. Bailey Schlosser racked up 36 assists, with Maya Waddington connecting 9. Defensively, Shannon Mulkey led the team with 5 blocks, Grecia Diaz Martinez with 4, and Blach with 3. Mackenzie Swanson tallied 25 digs tonight, with Schlosser and MacAskill each with 14.
 
The Grizzlies will look to bounce back at home this weekend, taking on Regis University Friday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. and Colorado Christian Saturday, Oct. 19 also at 7 p.m.
