Grizzlies Overtaken by Yellow Jackets

SPEARFISH, S.D – The Adams State Women's Volleyball team fell to Black Hills State in five sets. The Grizzlies move to 7-14 overall and 4-8 in RMAC competition.
 
The Grizzlies played in five tough sets, falling the first set 25-20. Adams State bounced back and won the next two sets 25-23 and 25-31, then fell again in set four 25-14. The Grizzlies played a tight set five, but ultimately fell 15-10.
 
Adams State opened up the first set with strong momentum, tying the game up four times within the first few minutes. Black Hills State picked up their pace, getting a few good kills to give them the lead. The Yellow Jackets kept their lead throughout the first set, coming out on top 25-20.
 
The Grizzlies came out in the second set on their toes, going on a 5-1 run at the opening of set. The Yellow Jackets quickly came back to tie the set at 7. Tying the score four more times throughout the set, the two teams battled on the court. Adams State capitalized and finished on top 25-23.
 
The Grizzlies took their victory moving in to the third set. Opening set three with two big kills from Hannah Goddard, the Grizzlies got on the board first. Again, the Yellow Jackets played the Grizzlies tight, tying up the set five times. With four lead changes, Adams State moved past Black Hills State 25-21.
 
Black Hills opened the fourth set with some heat, scoring their first point with a service ace. The Grizzlies battled back, tying the score four times within the opening plays of the game. With the score tied at 8, the Yellow jackets turned it on going on a 10-1 run to take a nine point lead. Black Hills never gave up that lead and shut down the Grizzlies, to finish the set 25-14.
 
Going in to set five, both teams were motivated and ready. Adams State came out and scored the first three points, with the Yellow Jackets quickly responding. The two teams rallied back and fourth to tie it at 9. Black Hills scored three quick points, putting Adams State on their heels. The Grizzlies responded to the Yellow Jackets with one point, but Black Hills finished the set 15-10.
 
Leading the Grizzlies attack tonight was Alexandra MacAskill with 14 kills. Following MacAskill was Shannon Mulkey with 13 kills and Goddard with 11. Leading the team with assists on the night was Maya Waddington, racking up 47 assists. Mackenzie Swanson led the Grizzlies defense with 19 digs followed up my Mulkey with 8 blocks.
 
The Grizzlies will travel to Rapid City, SD tomorrow, to take on South Dakota School of Mines. Service is set to start at 6 p.m.
