Grizzlies Upset Trailblazers

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Adams State Women's Volleyball team had a huge win tonight over the Dixie State Trailblazers. The Grizzlies dominated the court, winning 3-1 in the match. With two Grizzlies in double digits for kills, Hannah Goddard and Shannon Mulkey had a big impact of the Adams attack.
 
Adams State got their first conference win of the season, putting them now at 1-4 RMAC, 4-10 overall. The Grizzlies gave Dixie State their second conference loss, moving them to 3-2 RMAC, 8-5 overall.
 
The Grizzlies started out the first set getting the first two points and going on a 7-3 run. The score went back and forth for a while, with the Trailblazers slowly closing the Adams State lead. Dixie State cut the margin down to one point, 11-12, but Alexandra MacAskill came in and shut down the Trailblazer attack. MacAskill came in with the Grizzlies capitalizing on her eight consecutive serves. Adams State had their biggest lead of the night at 10, and finished out the set, winning 25-15.
 
Adams State came out with momentum in the second set, scoring the first three points from big kills from MacAskill, Mulkey, and Bailey Schlosser. The Trialblazers quickly responded with three of their own to tie the game for the first time. From then, the set was tied three more times. Dixie State then took control of the lead and the set. The Trailblazers went on a 10-4 run before Adams State got back in the game. The Grizzlies scored four quick points to cute their lead to two, and finished their run with three more points to tie the game at 16. Again, the Trailblazers got back up on the Grizzlies, finishing the set, getting their first win of the match, 25-20.
 
Both teams fired up and ready to go, the third set was the closest. The score went back and forth for the entire set, with the score being tied 10 times. Keeping the score close, Adams State got off to a good start leading 7-3. Dixie State quickly responded scoring four to tie the game at eight. With multiple solid rallies, the Trailblazers again cut the Adams lead to tie the set at 14. Dixie State went on a big run to pull away 20-15. With big blocks from Ogelvie, Goddard, and Chasey Blach, the Grizzlies got back in the game scoring six points to tie it up at 21. The Grizzlies pulled out the win with another big block from MacAskill and Mulkey, putting them up 2-1 in the match.
 
It all came down to set four for the Grizzlies, where they kept their intensity to defeat the Trailblazers. Dixie State got the first point and an early 3-2 lead. From there, Adams State went on a quick 7-2 run to gain the lead, and kept it for the remainder of the match, winning 25-20.
 
Leading the Grizzlies on the attack were Goddard with 15 kills, Mulkey with 10, and MacAskill with 9. Assisting those attacks were Bailey Schlosser with 19 assists and Maya Waddington with 13. The Grizzlies defensive stars were Ogelvie with 8 blocks, and Blach and Mulkey each with 5. Mackenzie Swanson lead the team with 17 digs, with MacAskill and Schlosser right behind her with 14 and 13.
 
The Grizzlies will hold out for another tight one tomorrow facing Westminster College. Service is set to start at 5 p.m. in Plachy Hall.
