ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Adams State Women's Volleyball team won big tonight against the Westminster College Griffins. The Grizzlies defeated Westminster in three sets, moving them to 5-10 overall, and 2-4 in RMAC competition.
The Grizzlies came out tonight with a lot of energy and momentum from the big win against Dixie State Friday night. Adams State came out in the first set with a quick 3-0 lead, with two service aces from
Mackenzie Swanson and a kill from
Shannon Mulkey. From there the Griffins turn on their game to come back and tie it up at three. The two teams rallied back and forth tying the set four more times. With the score tied at 11, the Grizzlies went on a 10-4 run extending their lead, 21-15. As the Grizzlies approached their final four points, Westminster also tallied four points, finalizing the set, 25-19.
Set two came with a big shift in momentum from the Griffins. Westminster College led for a majority of the second set, holding their largest lead of six after scoring seven consecutive points. Adams State began a comeback, diminishing the Griffins run. After Adams State tied it up at 15 all, the Griffins again pulled ahead. The Grizzlies persevered, and came back to win it 25-23.
The Grizzlies dominated the third set, making it short and sweet. Adams State came out and scored the first five points of the set, three of which were kills by Mulkey. The Grizzlies gained a strong lead with strong defense and impressive attacks. Adams State had their largest lead of 13 points. The Grizzlies finished the match 25-14.
The team played a great game both offensively and defensively. Mulkey finished the match as the leader on the Grizzly attack with 21 kills.
Hannah Goddard was also a big influence with 11 kills as well as Grecia Diaz-Martinez with 8. Setting up those attacks were
Bailey Schlosser with 19 assists,
Maya Waddington with 16 and
Alexandra MacAskill with 6. On the defensive side of things, Goddard led the team with 20 digs, followed by Swanson with 16 and MacAskill with 13. Swanson also had a great night from the service line, recording 3 aces.
The Grizzlies move in to this week with lots on momentum moving forward. Adams State will head to Las Vegas, N.M. on Friday, Oct. 11 to take on New Mexico Highland, and then will travel to Pueblo, Colo. to challenge CSU-Pueblo.
