Thunderwolves Take Down Grizzlies

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Adams State Women's Basketball team took on CSU-Pueblo for their home opener. The Grizzlies battled it out with the Thunderwolves, falling 64-50.
 
Adams State opened the game strong going on a 6-2 run with a layup from Ally McKenzie and two jumpers from Marshell Hollins. The Grizzlies held their largest lead of 8 half way through the quarter. CSU-Pueblo battled back going on a 9-2 run to cut the Grizzly lead down to one. The Thunderwolves pulled ahead right at the end of the quarter, leading the Grizzlies by four.
 
Zakiya Beckles led the Grizzlies in to the second quarter hitting her first free throw and a good three. Adams State tied it back up with just under four minutes left in the quarter at 22. Going back and forth, Adams State reduced the lead to one from a three pointer by Beckles.
 
The second half opened as close of a battle as the first half. Going 6-6, Hollins added four of the six points. The Thunderwolves began running the ball towards the end of the third quarter, getting a lead over the Grizzlies. Adding two more three's, CSU-Pueblo led the Grizzlies by 11.
 
CSU-Pueblo broke open the fourth, expanding their lead by 15. The Thunderwolves had their largest lead of 16 at the very end of the quarter. Adams State cut down the lead by two with a good layup from Makaela Ewing. The Grizzlies finished the game falling 64-50.
 
Beckles led the Grizzlies with 11 points on the night. Following Beckles, Hollins and Gutierrez each put up 10 on the night. Hollins was a large influence on both the offense and defense. She added five assists and forced many turnovers for the Grizzly defense. Gutierrez was also a leader on the boards, grabbing five rebounds, 2 offensive and three defensive. Ewing also had 5 rebounds, 4 defensive and one offensive, while putting up 9 points.
 
The Grizzlies will be back out on the floor tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 7 to take on New Mexico Highlands at 5:30 in Plachy Hall.
