ALAMOSA, Colo. - The Adams State Women's Basketball defeats the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls 57-45. This is the Grizzlies first win of the season, putting them up 1-2 in RMAC play.
The Grizzlies were led by Marshell Hollins who had 17 points on the night with 8 assists, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals. Laura Gutierrez also had a good night, scoring 16 points on the night.
Adams State opened the game scoring the first three pointer from Hollins. Ally McKenzie added a couple of layups to the Grizzlies score. Adams State trailed the Cowgirls at the end of the quarter 15-11.
The Cowgirls pulled away at the start of the second quarter. New Mexico Highlands had their largest of 14 with 3:15 minutes left in the first half. The Grizzlies got their first points of the quarter from two good jumpers from Gutierrez. The Cowgirls led the Grizzlies 27-18 at the half.
The Grizzlies came out in the second half with high full court pressure catching New Mexico Highlands on their heels. The quick start gave the Grizzlies a 6-0 off of steals from Zakiya Beckles and McKenzie. After a good three-pointer from Gutierrez, Adams State's Kassie Schell tied it up at 29. The Grizzlies kept their momentum with Makaela Ewing's big block down low. Adams State gained the lead from a layup from Ewing and a three from Gutierrez. Adams State concluded the third quarter leading the Cowgirls 37-33.
The Grizzlies took off in the fourth quarter, scoring 20 points. Paiton Demps added to the Grizzlies scoring two good layups. Adams State had their largest of 14 with 1:28 remaining in the game. The Grizzlies finished the game leading the Cowgirls by 12, 57-45.
Adams State leaders on the boards were Demps grabbing 8 rebounds, 7 offensive and 1 defensive. Hollins and Ewing each had 7 rebounds, Hollins with 4 offensive and 3 defensive, and Ewing 3 offensive and 4 defensive. Demps also followed Hollins, with 5 assists.
The Grizzlies will be back out on the court next week in South Dakota to take on Black Hills State and South Dakota School of Mines.
