ALAMOSA, Colo. - It was a night of big shots and high flying dunks for Adams State Men's Basketball on Senior Day as the team closed out the home portion of its schedule with a 90-72 win over Westminster College.
The Grizzlies (10-14, 10-9 RMAC) hit a season-high 13 three-pointers on 34 attempts, which was also a season high for a 38.2 shooting percentage. For the game they finished 33-66 for an even 50% and as a unit they tallied a season-high 21 assists in the win.
Prior to tip-off the Grizzlies recognized its three seniors in
John Dewey,
Davere Creighton, and
Miles Banks.
Adams State grabbed an early 10-6 lead but it was short lived as Westminster College (9-14, 7-12 RMAC) pieced together a 10-0 scoring run to grab a 16-10 lead before the home squad had a chance to answer.
The Griffins led by as much as six points in the first 10 minutes of action but never managed to create any sizable separation as the Grizzlies looked to make a statement in their home finale. Trailing 21-16, the Grizzlies made their statement with a 13-0 scoring run.
Adams State trailed by six with 9:06 on the clock but the team's 13-0 run was just under two minutes long and help them grab a 29-21 advantage. A pair of Creighton triples along with help from Dewey and
Rickey Norris gave the home squad the momentum it needed to retake the lead.
The Griffins ended the run with a deep triple, but a quick layup from Norris and a dunk from
Shemar Johnson on a dime of a pass from Dewey made it a 17-3 run and the Grizzlies led 33-24 with 5:53 left in the half.
Westminster College looked to keep its deficit within single digits but the fast pace and tempo from Adams State prevented any such agenda from happening. Johnson gave the home team a 10-point lead with a layup off another Dewey assist.
Leading 38-28 with just over four minutes left in the first half, the Grizzlies maintained a double figure lead for much of the final minutes. Dewey found Norris in transition for another first half dunk with :22 on the clock to give the Grizzlies their largest lead of 15 points, 45-30.
The Griffins managed to get one more shot in before the halftime break but never really had an answer against the Grizzlies first half tempo. Heading into the locker room, the Grizzlies led 45-32.
Three Grizzlies were already in double figures at halftime in Creighton with 14 points, while Norris and Dewey each had 11 points. Johnson was just under double digits with nine. As a unit the team shot 18-35 for 51.4% from the floor and were 8-19 (42.1%) from beyond the arc.
The second half was once again own by Adams State as the team scored 45 points yet again. Westminster nearly matched the output with 40 points in the second half but the home team maintained a double figure lead the whole time.
Creighton gave the Grizzlies their largest lead of the night at 23 points with a deep triple with 16:53 on the clock. The triple capped off a 14-4 run for the Grizzlies as they led 59-36. Creighton produced six of the 14 points with a pair of three pointers.
The Griffins tried to answer once with a dunk before the first media timeout of the half but once again that potential momentum to get back in the game was ended quickly. Coming out of the timeout Dewey threw up an alley-oop to Johnson that only he was able to grab for the aggressive dunk that brought fans to their feet.
Leading 61-40 after the Johnson dunk with just over 15:30 to play in regulation it was clear that the Grizzlies were going to secure the win at home. The margin of victory had yet to be determined as the Griffins kept looking to respond.
A
fast break layup from Westminster College with 14:55 cut the team's deficit to 19 points, 61-42. Creighton came down on the next possession and put up a three-ball attempt to silence the visitors. His shot did not fall but Johnson came flying into the paint and had the put back dunk. The dunk once again brought the Adams State faithful to its feet for a thunderous applause.
The Griffins managed to get within 13 points twice in the final 8:30 of regulation but never truly managed to threaten the Grizzlies from securing the win. Johnson and Norris put on a show in the final minutes with some more dunks to send fans out on a high note in the win.
Johnson's final slam of the night was timed perfectly. Coming out of the media timeout, Johnson used his length to steal the ball and get a breakaway dunk in transition as he made sure the
Plachy Hall Gym rims remember him.
Norris closed out the Grizzlies jam session with a reverse dunk with 3:33 left on the clock thanks in part to a clean touch pass from
Szymon Walczak in paint. The Grizzlies finished the night with six dunks as they secured an 18-point win in the home finale.
Four Grizzlies scored in double figures with three scoring 20 or more points on the night. Creighton flirted with a double scoring a game-high 27 points to go along with nine rebounds. He finished 9-18 shooting, including a 7-15 shooting performance from three-point range. Norris scored a career-high 25 points on 9-15 shooting. He also pulled down four boards, notched a steal and had a blocked shot.
Johnson added 20 points on 9-11 made shots and was 50% (2-4) from deep. He also had seven rebounds, dished out five assists, and tallied two steals. Dewey was facilitator on offense with 16 points and a career-high nine assists. He also grabbed six rebounds and had two steals on the night. As a unit the Grizzlies finished 11-12 from the free throw line for 91.7%
Joonas Tahvanainen led the Griffins scoring efforts with 21 points on 90% shooting (9-10), while also grabbing seven boards. Jake Connor added 15 points on 5-13 shooting and also had two steals. Brandon
Warr put up 13 points and led the team in rebounds with eight. Alec
Monson rounded out the double figure scoring with 10 points on 3-4 shooting and was 3-4 from the free throw line. The Griffins finished the game with a 48.1 shooting percentage on 26-54 made shots.
The Grizzlies will close out the regular season with their final three games on road. They start their road trip next weekend with games at Western Colorado on Friday, Feb. 22 and at Colorado Mesa on Saturday, Feb, 23. Both games are set to tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
