ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Adams State Men's Basketball defeated the Regis Rangers by eight in a tight game. The 78-70 victory put the Grizzlies back to .500 in RMAC competition at 8-8, and 8-13 overall.
John Dewey led the Grizzlies tonight with 32 points, four rebounds and one assist. Other high scoring Grizzlies were
Rickey Norris with 15 and
Shemar Johnson with 11.
Miles Banks dominated the boards with 11 rebounds.
Davere Creighton also crashed the paint, coming out with 10 rebounds.
The Grizzlies had 44 points from the paint, 15 of which were second chance points. Adams State made 31-69 from field goal range, and 5-19 from behind the arc. The Grizzlies had 20 points off of turnovers and 14 fast break points.
The first two minutes of the game started scoreless. The Grizzlies finally found their way to the basket with a fast break layup from
Rickey Norris, followed by a lay-up from
John Dewey. The first half went back and forth between the Rangers and Grizzlies, being tied five times. With 15:20 remaining in the first half, the game was tied at 8. The Rangers took control, battling for the lead over the next five minutes.
Dewey hit a big three after the steal and assist from Norris, to regain the Adams State lead 18-17 with 10:33 remaining. The Rangers tied it back up at 26 with 6:18 left in the game, and went on an 8-1 run. This gave the Rangers their largest lead of the night, 34-27.
Adams State bounced back, scoring 8 in the next minute and a half. The Grizzlies started their run with a 3 from
Cole Arceneaux. They got hot after that, with a fast break layup from Norris and a layup from Dewey to tie the game. The score stayed tight all the way to the end of the half, ending with the Grizzlies on top 40-39.
John Dewey led the Grizzlies with 21 points at the half, with
Miles Banks dominating the paint with 8 rebounds. Adams State shot 75% (3-4) from the line in the first half.
The tight game continued on in to the second half, being tied 7 more times throughout the remainder of the game. In the first four minutes, the Grizzlies and Rangers put up a combined 35 points. The largest lead in the first four minutes was only by 3 points, held by the Grizzlies.
In the following nine minutes, the score was tied five times. With only 7:45 left to go, the score was 59 all. The Grizzlies took off with a 14-4 run, giving them their largest lead over the Rangers, 73-63. Adams State held on, and came out on top 78-70.
Both Johnson and Dewey put up 11 points in the second half, with Norris and Creighton each coming down with 5 boards. The Grizzlies out scored the Rangers 38-31 in the second half.
Adams State will be back out on the court tomorrow night, Feb. 9, taking on the Colorado Christian Cougars. The Cougars are coming off a two-game losing streak, 6-16 overall (4-12 in RMAC). Tip-off is set to start at 7:30 p.m.
