ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Adams State Men's Basketball team blew Colorado Christian out of the gym 78-57 in Plachy Hall. This huge win put the Grizzlies to 9-8 in RMAC competition and 9-13 overall.
On the night, the Grizzlies shot 50% from behind the arc, making 9 of 18. Grizzlies also shot 42.6% from the floor and 11-19 from the line (57.9%). Adams State scored 41 points in the paint. Thirteen of those were second chance points. The Grizzlies had 19 fast break points, and 22 points off of turnovers.
Davere Creighton led the Grizzlies with another double-double: 11 points and 12 rebounds. The Grizzlies had three other players scoring double digits tonight:
John Dewey with 20,
Shemar Johnson with 17, and
Rickey Norris with 13.
The game started off with Creighton hitting the first three, giving Adams State the first points. Colorado Christian Cougars answered quickly hitting a three on the next drive down the floor. The Cougars never lead the game, but tied it three times in the first half. The Cougars kept is a close game tying it for the third time at 17-17 at the 12:32 mark of the first half.
Adams State went of a 19-9 run, giving them their largest lead of the first half 36-26 with 3:21 left to go. The Grizzlies finished the half outscoring the Cougars 38-32. At the half, Dewey and Norris lead the Grizzlies with 11 points each, and Johnson and Creighton with 5 boards. Also, in the first half, the Grizzlies shot 45% from the field, 50% from behind the arc, and 50% from the line.
Adams State kept their momentum going in to the second half, extending their lead to 43-32 with layups from Dewey and Johnson. With 17:28 remaining in the half, the cougars knocked the Grizzly lead down to 7, 43-36.
The Grizzlies had their largest lead of 25 (78-53) with 1:02 left on the clock. While the Grizzlies extended their lead, Adams State had some big dunks from Johnson and
Jared Perry, along with tremendous shots from beyond the arc from Dewey, Johnson, Creighton,
Cole Arceneaux, and
Vince Damelio.
Adams State had their biggest win of the season, 78-57, a 21-point lead. This win puts the Grizzlies in 8th place in RMAC standings, one game ahead of South Dakota School of Mines and Chadron State, who are both 8-9.
The Grizzlies will host their final two home games of the season next weekend, Feb. 15 and 16 against Dixie State on Friday and Westminster College Saturday. Both games are set to tip off at 7:30 p.m. in Plachy Hall.
