SHAWNEE, Okla. – Adams State Women's Lacrosse put together a late second half surge on the road Saturday afternoon at Oklahoma Baptist but it was not enough as the team fell 19-6.
The Grizzlies (0-6, 0-3 RMAC) fell behind 4-1 early to the Bison (3-5, 1-4 RMAC) which helped the home team take a 12-3 lead into halftime. Adams State added three more goals late in the second frame but Oklahoma Baptist managed to build a double figure and to secure the win at home.
Helping the Bison grab the lead early on was four goals scored in the first four minutes of play. The quick surge helped them lead 4-0 before a goal from
Savannah Penland cut the score to 4-1 with 23:18 to play.
The home team responded with three more goals before the end of the first 10 minutes of action to get out in front by six, 7-1. Penland once again answered for the Grizzlies with her second goal of the game at the 19:16 mark of the half to make it a 7-2 game.
The Bison closed out the final 19 minutes of the first half outscoring the Grizzlies 5-1 to lead 12-3 at the break. Penland added the third goal once again for the Grizzlies with 14:59 to play in the half.
Both teams got off a combined 44 shots in the first half, with 25 coming on goal. The Bison held the edge 29-15 overall and 17-8 in shots on goal. Each team had five saves and nine turnovers in the first half.
Five straight goals from Oklahoma Baptist to open the second period gave the team a 17-3 advantage through the 17 minutes of play. The Grizzlies looked to answer in that span but were unable to find the back of the net despite a number of quality looks.
Madison Gerchow ended the Grizzlies drought with her first goal of the day at the 8:16 mark. Just over three minutes later Penland added her fourth goal of the game and the Grizzlies fifth to cut the score to 17-5.
The Bison responded with two more goals in the final four minutes of action to bring the score to 19-5. The Grizzlies added their final goal with :53 to play as Gerchow scored her second goal to bring the final to 19-6.
Oklahoma Baptist won the draw control battle by just three, 15-12, but Adams State posted more clear attempts going 11-13, while the home team was 9-10. Adams State also had three less turnovers, 13-16.
Penland had a solid outing on the field with four goals on 13 shots, with five coming on goal. Gerchow added two goals while taking 10 shots overall, seven of which that came on goal.

Terra Iverson,
Tara Sowards, and
Jazmine Palacios all forced two turnovers. Goalkeeper
Louisa Sanchez notched six saves in the game for the Grizzlies.
Lauren McCormack led the Bison with five points on three goals and two assists. Madison Gordon was second with four points on a pair of goals and assists. Skomp also had four point's all on a game-high four goals scored. Three other players added three points in the win.
On the defensive end, Monique Mossop and Katie Kuehn each forced two turnovers in the game. McCormack also tallied 16 draw controls for the game. In net, Courtney Barnickle notched 11 saves in the win.
The Grizzlies will play one more game on the road in a midweek RMAC matchup at Colorado State-Pueblo on Wednesday, March 27. Game time is set for 6 p.m. against the ThunderWolves.
