ALAMOSA, Colo. – Adams State Women's Lacrosse opened up its home portion of the 2019 season Saturday afternoon against Notre Dame College (Ohio). The Grizzlies fell to the Falcons 19-4 to move to 0-3 on the year.
The Grizzlies battled early on and trailed by just one, 2-1, to the Falcons (2-0). A five-goal surge from the visitors help them create enough separation to ultimately secure the road win.
A pair of Notre Dame goals in the first five minutes got the team up 2-0 against Adams State. Out of the ensuing draw control,
Savannah Penland cleared midfield quickly to score the unassisted goal to get the home team on the board.
The aggressive play from the Grizzlies was on display the whole first period, but the Falcons responded and scored five unanswered goals to lead 7-1 with just over 13:30 to play in the period.
Shelby Nelson then ended the Grizzlies drought with a goal at the 13:11 mark to it a 7-2 contest.
Alexis Wellong then cut Adams State's deficit to four goals with her first goal of the year. She assisted on the previous goal then came back to score and keep the home team in striking distance. Notre Dame pushed its lead back to five goals with just over 6:15 to play in the period.
The Grizzlies final goal of the period and of the game came with 3:25 to play until halftime.
Madison Gerchow brought the Grizzlies within four on an unassisted goal. The Falcons once again responded with three more goals before halftime to lead 11-4.
The second 30 minutes of action fell in the Falcons favor as they put up eight more goals and held the Grizzlies scoreless to secure the 15-goal road win. Helping the Falcons in the second period defensively, was holding the Grizzlies to just four shots overall and three shots on goal.
Wellong led the way on offense with two points on goal scored and an assist. Gerchow took the most shots in the game with seven. Both Gerchow and
Alecia Begay each caused two turnovers, while Gerchow had six draw controls for the Grizzlies. In net,
Louisa Sanchez had 16 saves for the game.
Leslie Diaz led the Falcons in offense with six points on four goals and two assists. Katie Wendell and Danyelle Hardy each had five points. Wendell had a team-high three assist to go along with two goals, while Hardy scored five goals. Goalkeeper McKenzie Shean had seven saves to secure the win.
The Grizzlies will now hit the road for their next four games. They start their road trip Monday, March 18 with a match-up at Rockhurst in Kansas City, Mo.
