GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Adams State Women's Lacrosse suffered a 19-0 loss to Colorado Mesa Sunday afternoon on the road. The loss puts the Grizzlies record at 0-10 overall and 0-6 in the RMAC.
The No. 14 Mavericks (11-2, 5-2 RMAC) earned the home win thanks to a combination of a fast start and aggressive defense against the Grizzlies. They put up 29 shots overall with 26 coming on goal and their defense had the Grizzlies commit 19 turnovers, with 16 being caused.
The Mavericks used the first five minutes of play efficiently scoring four goals to lead 4-0 early on. The Grizzlies looked to counter in the first half but were held without a shot on the offensive end. Meanwhile the Mavericks used their early momentum to create a 10-0 lead at the midway mark.
With just over 15 minutes to play in the first frame, Adams State found a defensive rhythm and held Colorado Mesa to three goals to close out the half. The home team led 13-0.
The second half saw the Grizzlies continue to play well on defense as they held the Mavericks to six goals on six shots for the 30 minutes of play. The Grizzlies managed to add three shots for the frame, with two coming on goal but were unable to find the back of the net as the Mavericks ultimately secured the 19-0 home win.
Savannah Penland had two shots for the game to lead Adams State while
Madison Gerchow added one. Both players had one shot on goal as well. Penland also won two draw controls for the game.
Delanie Ward and Jacqueline Palacios each had two groundballs. Goalkeeper
Louisa Sanchez notched seven saves in the game.
Marcy Koch had the most goals to lead CMU with four and she added three assists for seven points. Paige Elliott had the most points on two goals scored and a game-high six assists. Marissa Leonardi was second in goals scored with three and also notched an assist. In net, Lula Mitchell got the win for the game start, while Cami Huff tallied two saves in the second half of play.
The Grizzlies will remain on the road next weekend for a Saturday showdown at Regis. Game time against the Rangers is set for 1 p.m. in Denver.
